machine gone crazy, pls help

Post by cat110165 » Mon Nov 21, 2011 5:31 am

Hi, I am a newbie. Thanks to this forum, I gain a lot of useful information in handling my machine and Apnea.
I had my treatment in PR One Auto Bipap machine for about 3 months. Everything was great until two days ago.
Two days ago, during the night, I was waken up by a beeping sound form the bipap. I checked the machine and it went crazy. The machine cut off its own power and restarted again.
The whole cycle was: power off-> restart-> beep sound-> blow air-> data activity->power off. The machine repeated this circle over and over again. Pressing any button was useless. Without any idea, I unpluged the machine. After a while, I reconnected the power. Even this could not help. The whole cycle started over again until it stop by itself and returned to normal.
The whole circle was captured in video. link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAiXpOYeAnM
During these two days, I have tried many ways to solve this problem which include: format the SD card in both FAT and FAT32, clean the machine, check for solution from user manual, check for virus on my laptop and SD card, use new SD card and original factory SC card. Without any luck, none works.
According to my observation, this crazy problem comes and goes without any trace. It can kick in within 10 mins, 1 hr, 4 hrs or even 6 hrs during the therapy no matter I am awake or asleep. It can last for 1 circle or 30-40 circles. Each circle needs about 10 secs to complete. During the circle, the machine delivery only one blow of air at the end of the circle which can be heard clearly in the video. That is dangerous to me because of suffocation.
I will not use this machine until this problem is solved.
Since I live oversea, the machine is a mail-order item form the States. Return for maintenance is costly and time-consuming. I really need all the helps and advices to solve this problem.

You may want to get ready to ship the machine back for repair or replacement. You tried the basic troubleshooting and it didn't work. That leads one to think that the problem may be deeper in the machine. The next step is to take the machine apart and look for a bad connection, but that may eliminate any chance of having the factory repair it.

Hi,
One thing I would be looking at is the electricity you are feeding it. What's the wall voltage? What are the cycles/sec 60 in the US? What are you using to convert to correct voltage (if need be)?

I am using the factory transformer for conversion . My wall voltage is 240v. The machine works properly for 3 months. Is there any chance that factory transformer has problem?

The PR S1 PAPs are known to have this problem. It is covered for replacement by the warranty. Any PR dealer, including one in your country, should handle the warranty for you. You might want to contact Philips Respironics for advice on how to handle this warranty if none of your local DME providers will handle it for you. Just tell them you purchased it whilst visiting the US.

Just a little word of warning -
When I moved to the US from Australia, I took my sewing machine, a hair dryer and couple of other small appliances.
Even though I used a quite expensive and compliant converter/inverter, my appliances failed fairly quickly.
My sewing machine probably died the most painful death (after a year), but after speaking with an electronic expert, he said appliances aren't designed to run on converters/inverters for any length of time - it puts a big strain on the machine and it will fail.
Mind you, that was 13-years ago and there may be some huge advances in electronics, but I would be cautious.

Cheers,
xena

On mine, the plug where the power plugs into the back of the blower unit is not very stable. Try wiggling that connector and seeing if you have any similar problems.

GOOD suggestion, Archangle! I remember reading of someone else having that same problem.

Another thing to try is to run your Bipap off of a 12 volt battery, you can get the plug from a local electronics place, and use at least 18 gauge wire with a fuse. with the humidifier I would use at least a 6 Amp fuse. The positive of the battery goes to the center pin on the PR1. Respronics does sell a very nice battery cable, but you might find it hard to get where you are at, unless on line.

According to suggestion from other forum, I replace my old power outlet with a brand new one. This does not work either. The malfunction jumps in 4 hrs after the machine is turned on.
I hv contacted Cpap.com for return and God, they are fast, a return code is issued in the same day. But, one thing catches my attention,
“Although machine diagnosis is usually completed within a week, if your machine has to be sent to the manufacturer for repair, the turn-around is usually about three to six weeks.” a direct quota fm the e-mail by Cpap.com.
It is reasonable that Capa.com needs a week for machine diagnosis. But, aren’t they supposed to send me a new machine, after the diagnosis, for replacement which is stated in their website, “Warranty Two years; replace with new”.
Further, time is important, I wait for about one month only for a new replacement instead of waiting almost 3 months for factory diagnosis. Christmas is coming and mail traffic is getting heavy. I really need the machine asap.
I just wonder what is their replacement policy? Or, under what circumstance that they will do the replacement?
