Headgear Slip Sliding Away
Headgear Slip Sliding Away
First, I want to thank all the people who helped me learn how to manage being a hose head. You guys are the best! I'm coming up on my 1 year anniversary, and I'm finally sleeping through the night in relative comfort (most of the time), dreaming (pretty much always), and usually waking refreshed. This is how it's supposed to be!
Only one little kink left. Literally. My headgear keeps sliding up and bending my ear up under it. After awhile the ear really hurts. I've read about using the hook side (?) of velcro to help stop that from happening. I'm not sure exactly where to put it, though. (I have long hair and the back of my head is flatter than most people's, so I think that's playing into it too and making it harder to keep the headgear where it belongs.) Does the velcro idea work with long hair? I don't want to start sewing things onto my headgear unless I'm pretty sure it's going to work, because I only have one, and the last thing I want to do is mess it up by doing it wrong.

Hi Sue
You put the velcro (scratchie side) on the back top strap either a larger strip in the middle or two smaller pieces off center. The scratchie bit sort of holds to your hair and keeps the strap in place. It does not pull or break your hair, just grabs it.

I wear a kufi cap under my headgear. I wear the headgear loosely to accomodate the cap and everything stays in place. A kufi cat is a little knit cap that just fits on the crown of the head.

I finally put velcro in my back strap. I just used a stapler at each end. Works great!

Re: Headgear Slip Sliding Away
I used the stiff side of no-sew velcro; just a little bit on the inside of the lower back strap of my Swift FX.

Yes, buy the no-sew velcro that has a removeable backing. You can just stick it on the headgear. I did find that after 4-5 weeks, one end started coming loose. I just cut that part off. When it came loose, the velcro stuck to my hair.... not too pleasant to remove. So, the velcro strip might have to be replaced at intervals. I used that concept on Swift FX, but am using a different mask/headgear now which doesn't have the slippage problem.

Suetois,
How old is the offending headgear? Is it perhaps just getting time to replace it?

Re: Headgear Slip Sliding Away
Thanks for the help everybody! I like the stapler version of things, and will give it a try tonight. If that works, maybe I'll get ambitious and sew it down. Also, it's possibly time to replace the headgear. It's a little over 6 months old. I didn't think it needed to be replaced yet, though, because I really haven't had to tighten it yet. In fact, when I tried to tighten it to keep it from slipping around, the mask was too tight, so I returned it to the way it was.
