First night with machine

Post by kkb » Wed Oct 26, 2011 5:40 am

Hi all,
Well, my equipment arrived yesterday. I slept with it on for the first time last night and did great I think! I looked at my info on the machine this morning and it said AHI was 2.2, average pressure was 11.6...all in all a restful night of sleep.

One question I do have is when nature calls in the middle of the night, how do others typically handle that? Do you completely remove your mask? Since last night was the first night for me, I just unhooked the machine from the mask and went to the loo with my mask on. I guess it's just a matter of personal preference, but I felt like I had my mask on good and didn't want to mess that up so it seemed easier to just unhook.

If I need to get up during the night, I just turn the machine off, disconnect the hose but leave the mask on. You're exactly right, getting the mask situated correctly is not something you want to do any more than you need to.

That's what I do.

I take my mask completely off... no issues for me really getting it back on properly. You could do it either way though... what ever works for you.

I turn my machine off and flip off my mask. If you get comfortable with your mask, it should be easy to slip it back on. Either way is good.

Note: for late-night snacks... the mask has to be off.... just sayin'...

I do it both ways depending on if I am sleeping really good or not. I hardly ever get up in the night now, usually when I do get up it is like an hour befro my alarm goes off then I leave the mask on.

I thankfully have not needed to get up yet for the restroom during the night, but last week I was paged for work and had to get online for a bit in the middle of the night. The mask was on comfortable (though I haven't had too much trouble getting it set right), so I just disconnected the tube connector at the nose (my mask has a detachable swivel connector), put my glasses on, and got to work. There is enough space above the bridge of my nose to slide the glasses in without taking off the mask.

On a side note, last night I couldn't fall asleep easily (think I hit the gym too late and had that post-workout high) and I disconnected as above and watched a movie. This mask is VERY comfortable!
Life before my CPAP was really no life at all!

You may find after a few more nights, that bathroom runs become a moot point. Most of us no longer have that happen since using cpap.
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

If I do happen to answer the call...I just unplug the mask tube and leave the machine on. I sleep by myself so the air rushing out of the tube isn't bothering anyone but a cat. Then I know when I look at reports that I got up that night cause it show a large leak for a short period. No biggie!!!

I take it completely off and it's easy to get back on. I am thirsty a lot, so I usually wake up and need to drink some water, which I tried with the mask on and doesn't work very well... So, I take it off, take a drink and back on and hopefully back to sleep without too much difficulty. I have only been using it for eight days, so I'm still hoping that I can start sleeping through the night.

Unless I'm having leaks (the air kind), I leave the mask on and disconnect the hose and leave the machine running for that minute that I'm gone. If the mask is leaking, then I'll take it off so I can refit it when I go back to bed.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

I'm still fanatical analyzing my Data, so I turn off the machine and remove the mask. Plus gives me the added advantage of having the machines display light up so I can get up and step over sleeping Dogs. Only have the one clip to snap back on, so it's no big deal.
