2nd sleep study-need help buying an autopap from someone

Post by ejackson1200 » Sat Oct 08, 2011 7:03 am

Ok went for the follow-up sleep study in the hopes of getting in a ASV clinical trail, pressure started at 7 and they were up 13 and still seeing apneas at 13. (Meds had greatly changed and centrals were almost gone - 5 in 7 hours-so don't qualify for study.)They set my brick at 14 and I didn't tolerate the pressure well so they backed it off to 12 and said come back in 6 weeks when you are used to it and we'll up it the rest of the way then.

Still tired, napping, not rested most of time, home pulse ox showing an average of 12-10 ahi an hour so going to buy an S9 autoset out of pocket. Found one that is listed as new for $375.00 an hour from here, (thanks to whoever mentioned checking craigslist.)

Person listed it as an autoset, then in e-mail said elete and thanks to this site I knew the diff and politely declined but was sent a picture and it clearly says autoset.

1. How do I make sure it's a new machine and is there any way it could be a mistake to buy it? (insurance bought brick just about a year ago so no coverage left)

2. My computer is Windows 7 does someone have a canned e-mail that tells me how to access the data?

Taking a deep breathe and getting ready to take the plunge thanks to this site and the helpful people on it.

Thanks,

It could be an ESCAPE AUTOSET, which I believe is still a brick. Get the REF number off the back of the machine. The S9 AUTOSET REF number is 36005. The last digit is different for the other models.
The machine hours are on the machine in the SleepReport.

You have quite a mix of people selling on CL, from the DME employee selling products provided to them as FREE samples to a patient who has no clue what they have to family selling off a deceased parent/grandparents belongings.

The point is that Buyer BEWARE is an understatement on CraigsList.

I am not sure how to show the hours used on an S9 so rather than guess I'll leave that for the experts we are lucky enuff to have here.

fwiw - I drove an hour to buy what he swore was an s8 bilevel that turned out to be an Escape. You did the right thing asking for a picture, just make sure it doesn't change when you get there.

ps. Have you given up on trying to get a better machine from your DME?

The REF code for the Escape Autoset is 36002, while it might make a good backup machine, it's not what you want.

If you want the protection of a warranty, buy on line from a reputable vendor.
secondwindcpap.com has S9 Autos gently used and open box for lowest price I have seen. Someone here said that cpap.com will match prices, but I don't think they have gently used or open box. You can check on that.
I found four sellers on Craigslist, different areas in my state, who were selling machines they purchased from DMEs. Those sellers told me there was no warranty and they don't know one model from another. I was sent info and picture on an S9 Autoset only to find after probing that it was an S9 Elite. Some sellers on Craigslist have S8s. Most of them don't know which model they have. Just know, that even if you get an S8 Autoset, you will have to buy the S8 card reader on Ebay or Amazon in order to view your detailed data. S8 Auto is an auto machine but has a proprietary card, not the generic SD card like the S9 has now. Buyer beware.
You can purchase an Intellipap Auto with Smartflex and humidifier for lowest price on secondwindcpap.com.
Check cpap.com also. The software for the Intellipap is an extra purchase, but machine and software combined and still less than other auto machines.

Windows 7 and the software seem to play nice together for the most part.

Check Uncle Bob's signature for the clinical manual and software links.
memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=38643
The manual will have instructions on how to get to hours of use on the machine (to see if new or not) by going into the clinical settings.

Tutorial for the software.

I did give up on going through my DME to upgrade the machine as I was getting no where- we'd gotten the machine while he was inpatient at a hospital at discharge and it was months before his medical condition was stable enough that I had time to research sleep apnea and find this awesome site. My DME told me yesterday they DO have the sleepweaver mask but coverage for mask is every 6 months and I'm not eligible yet. (Thanks to this site I'd already called my company and they said I have coverage as medically needed - as this mask is leaking like a sieve where he sleeps on his side it's needed. So that's on it's way, They said once it's opened they won't swap it out anyway so no sense in driving an hour to have it. I also asked about remzzs as the Dr was recommending them to reduce the leakages and guess what? They are covered as well.)

HOWEVER I'll know what to get and how next time and there will be a next time-insurance changes to medicare in about a year if it doesn't change sooner to ohio high risk pool.

Thanks for the warnings-it made me more cautious. I actually took someone with me, met at McDonalds by a power outlet to check it out, had money in my pocket.

So now I have the machine, it showed 0 hours, the thee masks, a swift FX, and Mirage Quatro and a zest were all in their sealed bags as was the climate tube. The paperwork from DME was actually in the carrying case as well.(The man was diagnosed with an apnea around 10 and was able to get a dental appliance that was working great for him.)

Makes me want to send my husband to bed to get him to use it now. He's tired enough to sleep but promised to take the youngest out.

That's great. Now you can get some real data to match you oximetry data too, and a nice selection of masks. I hope this helps.

I sure hope he owned that machine outright and wasn't still in the 'rental' phase of his insurance. He find himself in a pickle.......
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

Looks like you got what you were looking for. That's great! I was going to mention that I have a used S9 Autoset that I am going to be selling. I used it less than 6 months (154 days) and it has 1321 hours on it. No problem with the unit. I was switched to ASV and no longer have a need for this machine. I treated it like a baby - it's clean and well loved if anyone has an interest, pm me. I paid cash for it, so no DME has any claims to it.

Includes h5I humidifier and climateline.

Glad it worked out for you. Hope you got a good deal too.

The 0 hrs sounds a bit fishy but hey it's good for you. Plus having extra masks on hand is always a bonus.

I doubt that I would buy a dental appliance before even trying cpap but again, lucky you. And I doubt that his insurance would either much less buy both. Unless he bought both out-of-pocket. Or works at a DME but hey it's not your problem.

fwiw - those appliances aren't cheap and I can't imagine getting used to sleeping with something IN your mouth. When I first began cpap I used one of those sports mouth pieces to train my tongue to stay up on the roof of my mouth. It ain't easy. And some use the appliance AND cpap. Now that is discipline.

For me, knowing what I know now, I'll use the air pressure.

I paid $325.00 for the AutosetS9 with the humidier and climate control tube, bag, software chip and chip holder, and now am crossing my fingers that the guy doesn't calling saying he needs it back.

I do wonder at DME that would give an autoset as the first machine and then not open the masks and have the person try them out. The paperwork left in the machine carry bag says you can set up for auto supplies and they will ups them free of charge-I'm wondering if they accept my insurance.( I'm not too fond of my current DME who sold me a brick saying it was able to do data -yeah compliance data only but I wasn't smart enough to know-and refused to swap it out and NEVER mentioned new supplies or filters or anything until I learned here about them and asked - that would have been about month 10. Not like they haven't seen us every 2-3 months and checked the machine and software every time though I must say that when the original machine quit working properly after lightning hit the house they did promptly swap it out for another of the same model.)

IF he does call, I'd tell him he has the wrong number, lol.

You gotta good deal girl. Good for you.

ps. yea I wouldn't bother giving that DME any more of my money. In fact I would find a way to stick them with that old machine. But then you wouldn't have a travel machine
