Tips for Dealing with HOT weather

Post by Zeke351 » Wed Apr 06, 2011 6:57 pm

Greetings all,

I am quickly approaching my 1 year mark on the hose!! It has been relatively easy for me during the colder months but summer in Phoenix, AZ is quickly approaching. I really struggle with the mask when it is hot out. Being warm and having the warm air piped into me makes it almost unbearable.

I am looking for any tips/hints/tricks that others use when it is hot out. the obvious answer is to turn the AC down but the idea of a $300 electricity bill is even more uncomfortable than the mask in the summer. LOL

Thanks in advance,

Zeke351

After living in Las Vegas for a few years I do understand the heat and the electric bills that come with the air conditioning. Is there any way to allow the humidifier to still work yet at a cooler temp to deliver cooler air but still have the moisture you need in desert?

I always added a fan when I slept to help with the temp in bedroom in Vegas. I wasn't on cpap then though. Here in the midwest I still use the fan during summer heat to help overall body coolness but I only use nasal pillow mask so not so much on my face.

I have no experience with your particular machine. My respironics has a humidifier setting "0". There is water in there, but no heat at all. Not having heated air will surely help. However in AZ I bet you have low humidity and really need moisture. What comes to my mind are three things that might help: get a humidifier for your room, turn off the heat on your machine humidifier, and FANS FANS FANS. In New Orleans, I used three fans... one in the window, a ceiling fan, and a box fan on a milk crate at the foot of my bed to blow straight across my body.

Good luck!

I agree fans - set them up so the room flow is good and it can lower the room temperature 10 degrees. We have only two it works great.
If you own the home look into zone cooling (so only the bedroom(s) are set to cool more during the nights.
Hubby has humidifier but doesn't get hot air from it, so checking the settings might help.

Yes on the fans! Somebody elsewhere suggested using cooled water for the humidifier; so I actually keep a half-liter bottle of distilled in the refrigerator. That along with ceiling fan, and moderate A/C setting has gotten me through 100+ degree evenings in west Texas. Sleep easy,

Fans, of course. Have you looked at/tried some of the mattress pads, etc. that claim to keep you cool at night? Also, our sponsor site has a fan thingy that blows air through a mattress pad. Then, there are athletic clothes that wick moisture away from the body, and might be cooler to sleep in.
Good luck finding ways to stay cool.

Can't abide getting hot & it gets hot here in Hotlanta. Sleep in as minimal pjs as possible. I sleep with a soft loose-weave microfleece blanket as sheets block airflow & get too hot too fast. When I'm warm/hot, I sit in front of a vertical fan until I'm cold, sometimes really cold, before getting in bed. After 5-6 hrs, I typically wake up warm, toss off the blanket, turn over, use the remote to turn on my vertical fan, toss blanket over calves & feet and go back to sleep. While I hate the bill, I am willing to keep the AC low to stay relatively cool; the fan helps. I use passover in warm weather so no heated air. I have been known to drop an ice cube or 2 in the humidifier to cool the water.

A window unit AC would be one possibility to keep the bedroom cooler without cooling the whole house if you can get away with it. You might also be able to adjust the vents to keep the bedroom cooler than the rest of the house. Sometimes closing the door to the bedroom will keep it cooler, sometime that makes it hotter.

If you can't get away with a window unit, there are portable units that don't sit in the window, but run a hose to the window. They don't work as well as window units and are more expensive.

There are also single room built in air conditioners, but they're expensive.
