Nasal Masks and air leaking into eyes
Nasal Masks and air leaking into eyes
Are there any nasal masks that don't leak some air into your eyes? I don't want to waste any money on another mask if I'm going to have the same problem with it. I really like my Activa Lt mask but I am so tired of waking up with dry eyes and puffy eyelids and under my eyes. I have tried the Pad-a-check liners and I still get eye leaks. I have loosened and tightened the mask. My eye doctor suggested a sleep mask. I tried it and it made the leaks worse. You have to put it under the nasal mask and the nasal mask is so close to the eyes, so it leaks. I can't use the nasal pillows.....tried them but my pressure is too high. I'm at my wit's end. Don't know what else to try??? Help, please!

Re: Nasal Masks and air leaking into eyes
I seen these in cpap.com, I haven't used them but the reviews look promising. Hope this helps, I to sometime get air leaks into my eyes.

I thought about getting those, however while they may be good for keeping air out of the eyes, I don't think they'll stop the leak, which would be the first thing to try to do.carrion999 wrote:I seen these in cpap.com, I haven't used them but the reviews look promising. Thinking of quitting CPAP?
No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:
Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

Re: Nasal Masks and air leaking into eyes
At your pressure it is so hard to control the leaks with any mask..
Did you ever try Rested Gal's trick with pantyhose or tights with nasal pillows? Secure the nasal pillows to nose with panty hose strip? She has a picture of it somewhere. That way the pillows don't go flying across the room from the pressure

Re: Nasal Masks and air leaking into eyes
Thanks pugsy. For some reason, with the nasal mask, I can keep my mouth closed pretty good, but with the nasal pillows, my mouth just blows open and probably stays that way. Leaks are out-of-sight!! Tried the chin strap.....terrible! I so wish I could wear my Swift pillows, but no go. So I'm going to try the goggles for right now. Hope they work......

Re: Nasal Masks and air leaking into eyes
Hi, im interested in your comment that your pressure is too high to use pillows ! Ive found pillows is what works best for me with higher pressure. Im on a ventilator machine that ramps up to 24 during the nite, to keep me breathing! I use Swift FX pillows mask, which is a design that's intended to just float in place, not be snug. My leak rates are awesome. Last nite for 95 % of the nite, my leak rate was under 1 L/min, yet my machine pressure was often about maximum. Thats pretty close to a zero leak rate. I hope you can find something that works well for you ! Dan

Hi Dan, I can't use the nasal pillows because, for some reason, it blows my mouth open where the nasal mask doesn't. Don't know why and wish it didn't. Glad you are being able to use the pillows.

Re: Nasal Masks and air leaking into eyes
The tongue is not acting like a good door to block the air from exiting the mouth. If you could keep your tongue in the roof of your mouth it should block the exit...but sometimes hard to remember to do when we are asleep..Paula J wrote:it blows my mouth open where the nasal mask doesn't

Is your mask the right size? I have a small face and it's hard to get a good fit. My Profile Lite mask comes in petite and it's the only mask that has given me a 0 leak (not every night, but it's possible)

Instead of an eye mask, I tried swim goggles.
It actually worked!

I could see where goggles would lend even more authenticity to "bed snorkeling"

Re: Nasal Masks and air leaking into eyes
I use the eye mask and it works great for me. Mine is very thin and I wear it over my cpap nasal mask. I wish it worked as well for you as it does for me.Paula J wrote:Are there any nasal masks that don't leak some air into your eyes? Re: Nasal Masks and air leaking into eyes
Paula...I'm having the same problem...woke up this morning with my eyes so crusty, itchy I was dousing them with drops! I'm trying to use a comfort classic nasal, small...if I get the leaks under control, then I wake up with irriation from the mask (viscious red marks, sore spots) which I'm sure is from being too tight. If I loosen it, then I get the air in the eyes (last night was the worse)!! I do have a gel mask I was given, that seems to work better for me and had been using it for several nights, but last night I wanted to use my "new" mask (the idea of spending money for something not used bothers me!!)...big mistake! I also have an optilife nasal pillow system that was given to me...I tried it one night, but seemed to cut my "air" down in one nostril, but I have a low pressure and will try them again (and the different sizes) to see if I can make those work. I'll be watching your post for all the added "advice"!!!
