The downside of weightloss

Post by Janknitz » Sun Sep 04, 2011 2:15 pm

Oh, oh. 27 pounds gone since mid-June, but where do I lose it first? MY FACE!!!!!!! When I look in the mirror, I can tell that's what's changed the most. So the leaks are going up like crazy on my Quattro and no amount of adjusting is dealing with them. Yet the small won't work for me because of my chin configuration. So time for a new mask.

I'm contemplating going back to nasal pillows, but I'm still fighting allergies and there are too many nights I can't get a clear enough nose, even though I'm taking Loratidine and Signulair daily and using a saline rinse. It's not that I mouth breathe that much in a FF mask, but at least I can still breathe and stay asleep if my nose stuffs up.

I'm ecstatic to be losing the weight, but I prefer not to have to fiddle with my CPAP stuff. THe last few nights I've been waking up around 4:30 sweating--a sure sign of poorly treated apnea. I have to take a look at the data but I'm sure it's not going to be pretty.

Congrats on the weight loss, but sorry about the new problem. You're right, about losing "weight" in the face. I've lost 21 lbs since Aug 1, and that was the first noticeable place for me too.
9 more lbs for me and I quit.

Have you ever tried enteric Oregano capsules for the allergies? My wife swears by this! (Mrs. Vader can get by with a nasal mask)
She used to have extremely bad allergies, and Zyrtac, Claritan, Singulair, etc. weren't a lot of help until she started taking the Oregano.

I know what you mean. I have had to change my pillows and I'm somewhere in between small and medium. It's an adjustment I'm willing to make though. I want to lose about another 10 lbs.. and not off my face!

Back to the Swift FX--it's what fits best.
My old faves are just sitting by, all lonesome and unloved.

Congratulations! I've lost 32 lbs since May 7th. Same benefit--I have a new mask that I'm learning to use. Plus a papcap as the latest attempt to solve mouth-breathing that is new to me as well. I'm still too darn heavy; and I've replaced my work slacks twice, and may do again soon.

So I know the feeling! It will all sort out in the long run. Good luck with your quest to lose weight!

Best

55 lbs lost since May, and also a lot in the face (I would have prefered to lose that face weight loss further down on my body ). Fortunately the nasal mask seems to be ok with my thinner face.

A question for those who have lost weight. First, congratulations!!! My question is, how has weight loss affected your AHI? I have lost 10 pounds so far and my AHI is going up. I am not sure if it is related to the weight loss or something else. Thanks!

I'm on APAP so this is probably not the same as with straight CPAP. I would say my average AHI has gone down, as well as 90% pressure (which is now very close to min pressure). I will probably soon lower that min pressure to see if something changes.

Bravo on the weight loss. Your overall health will benefit. The mask thing is just one more solveable problem in your therapy. You can do it, and you know it.

My AHI went down just before the weight loss, which I attribute to the QuattroFX. (however still unchanged since the weight loss)
OTOH, I was not overweight too much to begin with. (maybe 20 lbs)

Congrats! Have your numbers gotten better after the weight loss even though you have been waking with the sweating?

I didn't know that waking up sweating was a sure sign of poorly treated apnea. Ruling out for some people the whole hormonal sweat issue, the bedroom heating up from sunrise, etc., wouldn't we then have to say that the hours previous to 4:30 would have to show signs on the reports of increased events? (learning here)

I confess I haven't checked the data, but for me night sweats are apnea related--my AHI will be ok but the pressure data shows a straight line at the top pressure (APAP). Until I get the leaks under control I won't be able to tell much, though.

Thanks for the pats on the back--I'm low carbing and once you get through the first few weeks it is easy and I feel great!

Did you just lower carbs or are you on a specific program?

I've eaten Paleo for sometime and love the energy, food types, and type of exercise. It took me months to get the hang of it but after resetting my thinking to what is optimum I found it comes naturally - which given what it is, is no surprise : ) http://www.marksdailyapple.com/definiti ... blueprint/ I used to spend hours doing cardio and now understand that may have kept me from losing that last bit of belly fat. I now have long leisurely walks often and lift lots of weight a couple times a week.

The result has been an increasingly leaner and stronger body. My body surprises me all the time. I'll have a memory of something taking effort only to find that now it was effortless. One such something was cleaning off the patio. Last year I remember lifting all the metal patio furniture (especially the table with ceramic tiles in it) and this year it was light. From a diet perspective I find that food brings me more pleasure than ever and my taste has improved. I will from time to time taste something I think I miss, like pie, and after eating the solitary bite think it just wasn't all that good. Perhaps I used to enjoy the sugar buzz to enjoy the food : ) Anyway . . . love my Paleo.
