Do you have breathing issues even b4 you fall asleep?

Post by soundersfootballclub » Thu Sep 01, 2011 4:39 pm

When I just lie down to rest I can feel that something is obstructing my breathing, specifically along my nasal path into my throat. The APAP is clearing it up whatever it is. Just wondering if this is common with OSA or are most here not even aware there is something blocking your airflow regardless of being awake or asleep?

Ah, that is the dirty, little, overlooked secret about sleep apnea. It is not just about sleep. Many of us with OSA do not breathe well during the day because we have very narrow airways that are subject to obstructions while we are awake. We do not breathe rhythmically for much of the day and this is a health issue as well as the more severe problems at night.

From an old post of mine:
People with good jaw structure and healthy airways do breathe rhythmically throughout the day (and night).

Part of my information comes from reading and watching videos about Oral Systemic Balance therapy, http://www.centerforsoundsleep.com/blog/?page_id=628 . Here you can see videos of patients who are not breathing rhythmically and are under tremendous stress. In the videos a corrective appliance is placed in the mouth and immediately the patient begins to breathe rhythmically and feels "a type of peace and relaxation" that they have not experienced before.

The argument then follows that many, maybe all, of us with OSA not only need therapy at night but need it 24 hours per day.

I can say for my own case, when I am feeling lethargic and tense during the day, a period of ten minutes of exercise where I am forced to breathe rhythmically does wonders for my energy level and removes the tension.
CPAP works well for me but I can't use it during the day. I will soon pursue some orthodontics to expand my jaw side-to-side and front-to-back. Maybe I have another 50 or 60 years to live. I want to breathe well during the day, not just at night.

Check out the OSB videos - amazing. Let me know what you think.

I've become much more aware of my breathing during the day. My most common night episodes are hypopneas, and when I am concentrating on something during the day, I will suddenly realize that I've forgotten to breathe and/or the breaths I've taken have been very very shallow. This is something I'd like to learn more about.

When I was stuck in ER last January and all hooked up I noticed that when I hunched over to eat dinner (oh yummy hospital food) my SPO2 dropped below 90.

Never gave it much thought before I read this... but my breaths during the day are very shallow also. Something more to think about...

I often find myself holding my breath at various times during the day.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

I think a lot of us feel the same. I have the jaw line that goes back a little and that seems to be significant. Perhaps we all need to do a bit more exercise.

I raised my computer monitor for the same reason.

I am going to go against the norm here (or so it seems). I have never had (or noticed) any breathing problems during the day. Never been out of breath unless I am over exerting myself. Never had Asthma ether. I do how ever have a small airway/ throat. When I was talking to the Doc. about Sleep apnea right before My sleep study, he said that in men with necks that are size 17 or bigger have a better chance of having OSA, mine was just over 17.

This is very interesting, I'm glad to know it's not just me. It's not much of a stretch to me to think that my breathing would become too shallow at night because i am noticing it happen during the day, if I'm stressed or concentrating, I eventually realize that it's been too long since I've actually taken a breath deep enough to cause an exchange of air. I'm thinking I could be part vampire, I hear they don't breathe either....

I don't know what you mean by "jaw", but as far as I know, there's no way to grow a mandible forward, only to expand it sideways. Let me know if you find any information to suggest otherwise.

Thanks for the response. I looked at the link you provided. I did a search under the doctor in Tacoma and he charges $23,000!? Isn't that device more or less like the dental device already being sold for sleep apnea?

I have the same problem of holding my breath while awake. I thought it was just me - I mentioned it to my GP and she made no connection to the sleep apnea. Guess they can't know everything! I've been on CPAP for almost two weeks now and I find I'm holding my breath a little less often. Like you, it's nice to know I'm not just someone with 'weird' symptoms!
