APC UPS for a CPAP?

Post by Dad Cat » Sat Aug 27, 2011 4:54 pm

Now that Hurricane Irene is upon me, I find myself wondering why I never put all the research and calculations I did to use and get a UPS for my CPAP. I would like feedback from others on what they think of my idea.

I was contemplating getting an APC SMX750 Smart-UPS X 750VA Rack/Tower LCD 120V and disabling (either by software or with wire cutters) the alarm.

This is a high end unit with a "true" sine wave output. It should last 6 to 8 hours powering my Fisher & Paykel SleepStyle 200 Series, Model HC234 set to 16 cm H2O and the humidifier heater turned off.

If need be, from one to five additional battery modules can be daisy chained to the SMX750 for googobs of additional backup power and run time.

Other than cost (yes, I know these units aren't cheap), I think this is a simple, elegant solution using equipment that's already designed to be a UPS.
But, I would appreciate other people's comments and thoughts.

Please be gentle with me, I'm a newbie (to this forum, not obstructive sleep apnea).

It would work, but may be overkill in terms of the features and price. Most CPAPs don't need a pure sine wave (most heated humidifiers do, however). If your CPAP runs on 12v, a large jump start battery pack would be more efficient and a lot cheaper. Some of these also come with a built-in inverter, in case you do need 110v AC. Have you checked out the Respironics Battery Kit with 400 Watt DC to AC Power Inverter sold by Cpap.com?

As gentle as I can be.... "Advanced Search" is found at the top of "each forum page", right under the Home icon.
Give it a try

Welcome to the forum, DadCat. I agree with above comment about cost and complexity, but more to the point of a weather/emergency situation, the jump start station is the most portable; it'll even work while being moved. That ain't 2 bad. I haven't used it myself for CPAP, but have used it as a power station for my mobile-only Amateur Radio, since I don't have a "Ham shack".
Keep coming back to the forum, it's a great place for info, mutual assistance, and some amazing Off Topic remarks as well. Sleep well!
