Difference Between Resmed Escape Auto and S9 Autoset
Difference Between Resmed Escape Auto and S9 Autoset
I asked this question on another post but thought I would make a new post so the topic wouldn't get lost. I'm due to replace my current S8 Cpap next month. The medical people I deal with only handle Resmed. What is the difference between the Resmed Escape Auto and the S9? Also, is there an option with either of these machines to use them as cpap only? Thanks.

Re: Difference Between Resmed Escape Auto and S9 Autoset
Both can be set to act as a CPAP.
But the difference between the two is very important!
The Escape Auto only records compliance data (hours of use).
The Autoset records full efficacy data (AHI, pressure, FL, ...)
The Escape Auto is a big no-no I would say!

Re: Difference Between Resmed Escape Auto and S9 Autoset
The S9 Escape Auto does offer one extra tidbit of data besides hours of use. It offers AHI. Simple AHI..no leak, no AHI breakdown, no pressure. Just the one number..the AHI.

If there is a helpful tech at the DME or your doc is helpful, explain what you want and ask for that machine. I would steer you away from the Escape because of the lack of data available. AHI, AI, and leak are important (along with how you feel) in determining the effectiveness of your therapy. MY S8 VPAP Auto 25 works in AUTO, Bilevel and CPAP modes. I don't know the equivilent S9. You can check out the ResMed website and get a lot of information. Also the clinical manuals are available at apneaboard if you want to do in depth research.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Re: Difference Between Resmed Escape Auto and S9 Autoset
I use the S9 Auto in cpap only mode, the S9 Auto is a fully data capable machine. The Escape, as posted above, only provides compliance data. To get the best treatment you want a machine that will tell you what your leaks are and break down the ahi. That way, if something is not working you have a better chance of pin pointing down what it is.

Re: Difference Between Resmed Escape Auto and S9 Autoset
The Escape Auto is a stripped down version of the S9 Autoset. Look at the comparison on Resmed's site: http://www.resmed.com/us/products/s9_se ... c=patients
If you're at all interested in monitoring your data, you really don't want the Escape Auto. I can't find the price difference. CPAP.com doesn't list it, and the only other online store says they don't sell it online (that's odd). But regardless, the price difference won't be very much. The DME providers are reimbursed at a flat rate no matter which machine they provide you, so their tendency is to provide you with the cheapest machine that fits the billing code in order to maximize their profit.
And, yes, any Auto machine can be set to run in CPAP mode, but not the other way around. The price difference between an auto and a CPAP is minor, as is the difference between a fully data capable machine (like the S9 Autoset) and a no-data machine, like the S9 Escape and Escape Auto.
The difference was important enought to me, that when my DME refused to provide me with an S9 Autoset, I bought my own machine online and paid out of pocket for it.

The S9 Autoset belongs on your nightstand
The Escape belongs in your trash can

Should have the model name on top. See where this one says AutoSet? Sorry for image but the best I could find.redrockss wrote:hmm...how do you tell the two apart?
If looking at the machine face on, look top left of the LED screen.

There is no such thing as an "S9 Auto."jabman wrote:I use the S9 Auto in cpap only mode, the S9 Auto is a fully data capable machine. The Escape, as posted above, only provides compliance data. There is an "S9 AutoSet" and an "S9 Escape Auto." If you ask for an "S9 Auto," the DME will probably try to give you an "S9 Escape Auto".
At least one member has been fooled into the wrong machine this way. Please be sure to say "AutoSet."

Re: Difference Between Resmed Escape Auto and S9 Autoset
Thanks for all the input. I've been using a cpap for 17 years and I'm not really interested in devoting any time to analyzing all the data you guys talk about; just not interested. I'm so used to the machine now, I usually can't go to sleep without it. I've used a Swift II for as many years as they have been in production and like them fine. I tried the other Swift and it made the end of my nose sore as hell, so I dumped it. I don't have any leaks, nor do I have any issues. Since I alternate from back sleeping to side sleeping, the only problem I experienced in the last year or so was that I began to recirculate out my open mouth when I'm on my back, giving me a painful dry mouth. No, I'm not interested in tennis balls at my age. So now I tape up and sleep very well. Having had a roto-rooter job, I now enjoy 8 to 10 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night and feel great all day. Even though I now am not concerned about data, I think I will ask the doc to prescribe the S9 Autoset, just in case I need it. Thanks.

Re: Difference Between Resmed Escape Auto and S9 Autoset
Wise choice, grasshopper.
I started out on an S9 Elite--also a good machine; but I could not self-titrate with it.
I purchased my S9 Autoset from our hosts when I went on a diet, expecting to lose over 30 pounds. (I have)
That amount of weight change (+ or-) can result in different pressure requirements.
I just wanted to be prepared; and did not want to have to wait for another sleep study.

Good choice. You don't have to bother with the data if you don't want to but it is nice to have it available just in case a need comes up. Even if you're not interested in the data, get the data capable machine. If you have problems, you doctor can figure out a lot from the data. It could save you the cost of a sleep study. Or simply make it easier to fix problems.

Re: Difference Between Resmed Escape Auto and S9 Autoset
Using images and names, it is very confusing. Here are some links:
CPAP Escape S9 Auto - image shows name of "AutoSet" http://ts4.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.47188517 ... =1&pid=1.7
CPAP Escape S9 Auto - image shows name of "AutoSet" http://ts4.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.47416837 ... =1&pid=1.7
CPAP Escape S9 Auto - image shows name of "AutoSet" http://ts2.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.47416837 ... =1&pid=1.7
CPAP Escape S9 Auto - image shows name of "Escape" http://ts4.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.45376556 ... =1&pid=1.7
ResMed S9 AutoSet Elite Escape - image shows name of "Escape" http://ts4.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.49149169 ... =1&pid=1.7
ResMed Escape S9 Auto - image shows no name http://ts1.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.46832678 ... =1&pid=1.7
I was trying to find some ID ont the unit itself that would actually have the word
"AutoSet", "Elite", "Escape". or "Escape Auto" but I dont see it. I do see "ResMed", "S9" and "Rx Only" and a serial number, ref number and lot number.
I can assume that the images returned by Bing are simply mislabled, and that AutoSet is AutoSet.
The problem is that my SD card only has 2 files, STR.crc and str.edf and can't be read by SleepyHead-0.9.3
I sure hope I do have the AutoSet, and the 2 files can be read by sleepyhead.
