Since APAP getting less sleep but feel more energy

Post by soundersfootballclub » Sat Aug 20, 2011 1:45 pm

during the day. Still feel out of it during the day from waking up multiple times and not being used to mask glued to face, leaks, mouth breathing fire I mean air. But oddly enough I feel a degree of energy that I can't even remember having. It's faint but there and noticable. So I am wondering if this feeling of increased energy is from deeper and longer sleep from APAP? Does this benefit one more than duration of sleep say I am getting maybe 7 hours now instead of 8 a night. Hmmm.

If you're getting good sleep, you don't need as much of it.

It is the Quality of the sleep and the O2 levels not dropping that are making the difference.

9 hours of O2 deprivation and interrupted light sleep versus 4 - 6 hours of healthy deep restful sleep even if there are interruptions.

Right now my body and mind are quite happy on 6-7 hours of cpap sleep as opposed to 10 - 12 hours of pre cpap sleep.

That's exactly what is happening to me. I am waking up maybe twice a night (I didn't used to do that much), but I am requiring fewer hours of sleep and I do seem (I think) to have more energy during the day. I always HAD TO HAVE 71/2 to 8 hours a night and now I seem fine on 7 hours. I was going to post the very same question that you asked. Do you also feel better around 3:00 pm. I've had a mid afternoon slump my entire life -- always did my "thinking" work in the morning. Too bad I'm no longer working --- would have been much more productive. How can this happen after just 5 weeks of use!! One last thought -- I think I've had apnea my entire adult life, so this new feeling is a tad concerning --- like what's wrong with me -- I feel kind of different.

That's great to hear Jess especially since you have only been on treatment for 5 weeks. I am getting up maybe 3 times a night since starting treatment when I used to get up 1 time. I am still feeling tired around 3 o'clock sorry to say. I have been able to nap last 2 days though which in a way is good news. Good news because my sleep apnea was becoming most apparent when I could fall asleep during a nap, I could tell something was wrong with my breathing. So now that I can actually nap is an improvement. I hope I feel like you in a few more weeks and can get rid of the need to nap! Good luck.

Two more questions --- how long have you been on cpap? Did your BP decrease with cpap? I am not one to compare the naps to as I have never taken naps in my life -- I was never sleepy --- just exhausted mostly in the afternoons.

Tuesday will be 2 weeks. Luckily my BP is very low and I don't have any signs of sleep apnea affecting my body as of yet outside of daytime fatigue and other common symptoms. I am not very sleepy either during the day, definitely just feel worn out all day. I have to lie down and rest in the afternoon for 20-30 minutes but I can rarely actually nap and fall asleep.

Congrats on the improvement. I look at it this way: You're in bed for a shorter period of time, but you're actually getting more good quality sleep. I would suggest being careful not to let this new feeling of energy lull you into thinking it's OK now to get less sleep than you should, though. Depending on how long you've had apnea, your body needs plenty of time to repair the damage that may have been done. Happy PAPping!

Thanks redjoe. No way do I have any illusions right now about my progress. I still feel tired during the day. I am going to take advantage of actually falling asleep and napping and not just lying in bed if that is going to be an option from now on as I slowly catch up.
