Are my leaks too high, or OK?

Post by scottjf8 » Sun Jul 31, 2011 11:32 am

Here is my detailed report from Rescan.

I'm using the Swift FX pillows... I'm not sure how to interpret my leaks at this point.

Thoughts?

Also I'm really looking at the last few days since I'm just now becoming much more comfortable with CPAP and my mask.

scott... when the leaks go above the red line then they're too high.

How about now?

I think I've got my Swift FX as adjusted/comfortable as I'll ever get it

Have you tried Lansinoh? Don't laugh, its actually nipple grease for breast feeding moms to keep the nipples supple and crack free. BUT....for us it tends to stick the pillows to your nares and cut down on leaks. Its a bit tacky and seems to do the trick, just a dap on the inside edge and outside edge of each nare. Comes in a purple tube in the baby isle of most stores...Walmart, $10, and one tube will last you a year.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

in a nutshell scott... when they go over the red line... you're leaking too much.

Better but still too close to the red line too often.

Especially the medium green line (95%) it needs to stay well below the red line.

I'm not very good a reading graphs but aren't the leaks shown in the second graph minor leaks? The leaks look very much under control to me and no action should be taken. Am I wrong?

You want the leaks to be as close to 0 as you can get them. You also want the leak line to be as straight as you can get it. A straight flat line is best. It seems to me that leaks, especially leaks that come and go or vary in intensity, disrupt sleep. Anything that disrupts sleep is not good. If whatever mask someone may be using is leaking regularly, too much, or enough to disrupt sleep, they might want to try a different mask and see how they do.

edit to add; try looking up you mask on the forum, search for tweaks on the mask. You might find a trick to help.

The medium green indicating 95% of the time at or below is a lot closer to the red line than I would be happy with.
These last summaries are improved over the first set but many of the nights still close to the red line.

I actually prefer to look at a single night report leak line to judge how bad or not it was. Gives a better idea.

The Swift FX mask is not a real leaky mask. It is not difficult to have near zero leaks with it.
Remember the ResMed machine is already removing a factor for vent rate so the leak shown is all excess leak and unwanted. I would not want that med green line to be anywhere near the red line.

The problem might not be your mask. Perhaps you're a bit of a mouth breather. Do you find your mouth quite dry in the morning?

There is room for a improvement, but I don't think you need to worry. Your median leak rate is excellent. 95% is high enough I'd go look at the detailed data and try to get a better sense of what's going on, but it looks like your mask seals very well most of the time, and most nights even 95% is okay. If your AHI stays under 1, there aren't that many events happening, so it might not matter whether or not the machine can tell CA from OA 5% of the night. I'd want to see when those leaks happen, though, and if there is any correlation with other things going on. Do you get clusters of events, or are they scattered through the night?
