I quit EDIT, Trying again
I quit EDIT, Trying again
Year and a half ago I was told I had sleep apnea, after a sleep study. I got my VPAP adapt sv. Now a year and half later I have canceled my next appointment with doctor. I just can't sleep with the mask on. They want to do another study, which will mean more money outa my pocket. I stopped trying to use the machine about 5 weeks ago, and I feel better rested, wife said I don't snore anymore, now if my heart is stopping I have no idea. I guess these machines are just for certain people. So now my question is what am I suppose to do with this machine I paid thousands for beside my bed?

Re: I quit
If you REALLY want to sell the cpap go to cpapauction.com as long as it isn't a Resmed machine. If it is Resmed then you will have to go to ebay, craigslist or kijjiji. Someone may be interested here on the forum, if they are they will pm you. You should have another sleep study, if you are good to go, then fine, but if there are other problems.........perhaps you should stick with the cpap macine. Cpap is the gold standard for sleep apnea and if you still have sleep apnea then you should tell us what the problems with the therapy are and we can perhaps help you out. LSAT told you what will happen if you don't use the cpap.
Good luck
Good luck

Re: I quit
I see you've only been a member of this forum for a year. [EDIT: in a full year of membership, you've never posted until today....why? If you had questions or problems, whey didn't you ask?] You have landed in the right place to get this to work yourself. Are you ready to start over with the help of the wonderful and experienced folks here who can truly help you? If so....
1. Please take a minute to go up to the User Control Panel (under search, top left) and then to your Profile and then Edit Equipment. Choose your gear from the pull down menus and the choose to show those in TEXT, not pictures. This will put your equipment at the bottom of every post your write automatically, like mine below. Those with the same equipment can help you better than having to constantly ask you what you use!
2. Tell us what your diagnosis was... in terms of severity. Mild, moderate, or severe OSA? Your VPAP machine is a highly sophisticated machine, and it isn't usually prescribed unless you have special needs for that type of machine. My guess is that you REALLY need to be using it. What was your pressure Rx? If you don't have them, get copies of your complete sleep study and Rx. You have every right to copies of all these things, and they are important to have.
3. The MASK is 90% of the therapy.... and for every mask, there is a solution. Sometimes, that solution is ANOTHER MASK. You have the right to return any mask to your DME within 30 days and try another. Some folks go through several before finding THE ONE. Once you have your equipment shown in your posts, those with the same mask can help guide you to a better fit, stop leaks, etc.
4. Do you have a fully data capable machine? We won't know until you tell us the brand and model of yours, but I suspect a VPAP is. Therefore, do you have the software to monitor your therapy so you can see its efficacy? Monitoring your own therapy is imperative to having control over your success and health. Just as diabetics monitor their own blood sugar and make adjustments to their insulin, cpap users need to become empowered patients and take control of their own therapy.
PLEASE give this another try. You do know the consequences of not doing this. The deleterious effects to your body will be terrible..... high blood pressure, brain fog, increase chance of early dementia, increased incidence for heart attack, stroke, and death. You owe it to yourself to do this.... you owe it to your loved ones to keep them from taking care of you if have a stroke...or worse. If you choose not to....please increase your life insurance.
We are here to help.... you can do this.

Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.
Re: I quit
I thought the same thing, however untreated sleep apnea will likely be a no-go for life insurance unless another sleep study confirmed that it was no longer an issue.LSAT wrote:Sell the CPAP and use the proceeds to buy life insurance.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?
No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:
Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

Re: I quit
You wouldn't have been prescribed an Adapt SV unless you really needed it. I would not consider quitting as an option. Believe me, I know how difficult it is, especially when you don't feel any difference. The difference may be where you can't feel it. The SV will keep you breathing and it's the oxygen to your brain that is cut off when you have apneas and you are not using your machine.murph1031 wrote:Year and a half ago I was told I had sleep apnea, after a sleep study. Your decision to quit using it is proof enough that you are not thinking clearly and need to stay on the SV. You will not get used to it if you don't use it every night, all night. Don't give yourself the option of quitting.
We can help you with advise on mask issues, leak issues, and such, but we can't strap the mask on for you. I don't think that you really want to quit. You are just very tired and need some help getting things more comfortable for you. How can we help you do that?

You could sell it and buy a gun and play Russian roulette, that way you wife won't have to change your diapers when you have a stroke.
Yeah you won't care that you are dribbling at both ends but your wife and family will. Off course you may consider that sweet revenge.

Murph, if you were prescribed and ASV, then you likely have some difficult breathing problems at night. Even though you may not be sleeping well with the mask, that can all be adjusted and tweaked, that's what this whole forum is for. But if you're not breathing at night, you're destroying your body. More money out of your pocket? Like Spinner just said, think of all the costs involved with a stroke or heart attack. That is, assuming you survive.
If you're not going to use the mask, that's fine, but at least follow through on a sleep study to confirm that you are breathing at night and that you don't have low O2 levels depriving your heart and brain of oxygen. If you're fine, then use the proceeds from the mask to pay off the study. If you're not fine, then the study was well worth the money.

Re: I quit
Murph there are many people in this world that deal with health issues that are much worse than yours. They put their family first and push through the day to make ends meet to support their family. But if you want to be a burden on your family you can sell your xpap on the websites listed in the above post.

Wow! Some of you guys are pretty harsh! LOL
Still, when I ran on the ambulance, they trained us to tell people straight out if they were going to die if they didn't go to the hospital. Some people just need that to make the right choice!

Re: I quit
Since his unit is an ASV unit, I doubt seriously he could get life insurance even if it is treated. Untreated obstructive and central sleep apnea is a BAD combination.ameriken wrote:I thought the same thing, however untreated sleep apnea will likely be a no-go for life insurance unless another sleep study confirmed that it was no longer an issue.LSAT wrote:Sell the CPAP and use the proceeds to buy life insurance.

Re: I quit
By the way, murph1031, before being put on an ASV unit, I had unmanageable high blood pressure. Combine that with Ibuprofen (to handle the horrible headaches from oxygen deprivation during the night) and I ended up with permanent kidney damage. The consequences of untreated apnea (especially if you are using an ASV unit) is VERY severe. Please rethink your choice.

Re: I quit
You will probably need barium treatments.
"Doctor, how do we treat this guy?"
"Barium."
"You mean a barium swallow?"
"No ... bury ... him."
Save the machine. You or your caregiver will want it after the heart attack or stroke. If you sell it, you won't get any significant percentage of what it cost you. I've seen similar machines on sale on Craigslist for $250 or so. Your insurance probably won't pay for a new machine after the stroke if you sell the old one.
Seriously, sign up here and try to work through your problems. Sometimes fellow apnea sufferers can help where your medical profe$$ional$ don't. We may be able to help you figure it out and make adjustments on your own.
I don't think you can sell it through ebay. Craigslist can work.
