Post by CPAPselecta » Thu Jul 28, 2011 10:07 pm

Ive had a patient coming in this afternoon and has found that his hotplate for his humidifier has not been heating up even after and hour of the machine being on. Anyone else had problems with the Humidifier regarding hotplate i ended up replacing his machine.

If it's PRS1 (Philips Respironics System One) machine, it has a "smart" humidifier option that senses the moisture of the air and dials back the humidification if it's not needed as much. I suspect if you set it to level 5 humidification, it will always heat at least a little.

You can turn this option (System One Humidification) off in the clinicians menu if you want to, and it will do "dumb humidification" and should always turn the heat on if you select humidification.

Is it humid where you are?

Be sure the Humidity numbers come up around the dial and the little wavy line symbol appears to the left of the dial. If the humidifier is not making electrical contact, that might not come on.

Its not Humid at the moment as in Australia our season is winter. we suspected that our client was expecting hot air instead of humid air to come out of the hosing to her mask. In the clinic the humidifier water chamber would heat up fine but apparently when they got home it wouldnt? so u could see our frustration, they ended up buying a resmed s9 autoset with humidifier and paying for the diffrence in price but know we have been left scratching our heads and wondering what happened as we did change the setting in the clinical settings. Anyways moral of the story is keep your customers happy and they were happy in the end...hopefully

Sounds like the patient decided they didn't like the Respironics machine for some reason and used this as a way to get a ResMed one instead. From your reply, I would assume that the outcome would have been the same if the patient had been up front on the issue. Good on ya.

It happens; but, I doubt PR humidifiers are any less reliable than the others. I received a REMSTAR heated humidifier that just did not heat. Replacement worked fine. I have not looked into it, but there seems to be an optical link through a sensor-emitter on the bottom of the PR CPAP used to control the humidifier. I suppose that means the problem could be on either the CPAP or humidifier side--or maybe sometimes just a piece of dirt...

That connector does look like some of the fiber optical connectors, but if you look at it carefully, I think it's just an electrical connector.
