A Ventriloquist Darth Vader

Post by elmunc » Tue Jul 26, 2011 12:20 pm

Hi everyone,

For almost two years I've been using an Escape S8 CPAP machine. Very happy with it. I adjusted to CPAP surprisingly easily, and kind of liked the constant, soft white-noise-like "whoosh" of the machine I was using. It didn't have many bells or whistles, but I didn't mind.

Recently I've had to do a lot of traveling, and decided it would be convenient to buy a new machine for home and convert the S8 to a travel machine. So, based on the rave reviews I've seen everywhere, I went with the S9 Escape for my home unit.

It's kind of freaking me out.

Perhaps because the motor is so quiet, the only thing I really hear is the amplified sound of my own breathing -- but the sound of the breathing is coming out of the machine rather than out of me! So I sound sort of like a ventriloquist Darth Vader. To be honest, it sounds a little like I'm in an ICU.

I miss the steady soft "whoosh" of the S8.

Has anybody else noticed this effect with the S9?

(Note: everything is set up properly, and it's not a leak issue. The seal is great.)

Why does Darth Vadar get all the love, no Dr. Doom or Green Goblin...

I haven't noticed that myself. It's quieter than my old machine. Did you change masks at all?

Please don't use "rave reviews" and "Escape" in the same sentence.

You bought a dumb brick. "Escape" means the DME got away and left you with a machine that provides no useful data.

So how do you know there are no leaks when you have no data?

BTW, use a thick hose cover and the noise will likely be greatly reduced.
