"Pot-tay" question
I am still pretty new to the "sleep-apnea universe" and am so thankful for this page. You guys have the best answers for the craziest questions!
So my question's kinda weird. When I get up in the middle of the night to use the potty ...sorry if this is TMI...I remove my mask. The hose doesn't reach that far... so when I return to bed and put my mask back on, my machine is at prolly the highest pressure. Then I can't get a good seal around my face. I have turned it off a couple of times so I'm back at the beginning of the ramp, but I'm not sure how that affects my SD card. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!!
Oh yeah, I use a ResMed S8 auto with a full face mask.

Not the first time that issue's been raised here, and it won't be the last.sleepyvetech wrote:I am still pretty new to the "sleep-apnea universe" and am so thankful for this page. You guys have the best answers for the craziest questions!

What I do when I need to get up: Shut the machine off and unhook the hose from the mask (keeping the mask on). When I return to bed, I just reattach the hose to the mask and hit the ON button on the machine. (You can easily breathe with the mask on while you visit the bathroom, and then you don't have to fiddle with it when you go back to bed.)
What'll "mess up" your data is leaving the machine running while you're away, which will register as Large Leak.
Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.

Re: "Pot-tay" question
When I get up I disconnect the hose from the mask and leave the mask on but I don't turn the machine off. When I reconnect the pressure isn't too much and if it was I could just hit the ramp restart but I generally don't. I do this cause then when I read my reports it does show as a large leak but I know I got up in the middle of the night. I do this in my sleep sometimes so I forget I got up, the report comfirms.
Today is a new day: Laurie
Re: "Pot-tay" question
Have you tried using your machine without ramp? When I first started cpap I used ramp for a few weeks and I would not go to sleep because I was waiting for the air I needed. I went to sleep much faster with out it.
To answer your question. I use the Swift FX mask and when I get up I turn off the machine, unhook the short hose from the long hose, never removing the mask, do my business, back to bed, hook up the hoses, and turn on the machine. I go right back to sleep. The flow chart will show the time the machine was off.

Re: "Pot-tay" question
Geez, why mess with all that turning the machine off and on, taking the mask off and on, or popping the hose off and on. So much trouble when all you gotta do is just stay in and wet the bed, the mattress is very absorbant. Duh!
Seriously, it's a good question and I don't really have a pattern yet. Sometimes I take the mask off, sometimes I take the hose off, and sometimes I turn the machine off. I guess I'm glad someone else decided to ask this question!

Thinking of quitting CPAP?
No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:
Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

Re: "Pot-tay" question
If you're comfortable starting back with the ramp, go ahead and don't worry about the data. If you're still in the period of time when you're being monitored for insurance purposes, they just count total hours. It's 4 hours a night, not 4 hours continuously.
Most of us turn off ramp after we get used to CPAP. That way, you can adjust your mask at full pressure, and you probably won't feel the pressure after you get used to it. I find I sometimes have to open my mouth and let air gush out to convince myself that I'm getting pressure when it's at 12 cm.

Re: "Pot-tay" question
The thought of someone slinking around the house in the dead of night with a CPAP mask and hose extension on conjures up all kinds of scenarios about horrific shooting accidents due to "friendly fire."
Wisdom: Lose the ramp. It's like training wheels on a bicycle. You shouldn't need it anymore.
Oh, and it's "Pad-Thai," not "Pot-tay." Delicious noodle dish found in Thai restaurants.

Thanks for putting my mind at ease regarding the data. Sounds good!!

You might want to try nocturnal catheterization. Just pop that hose in before you go to bed and even the least absorbent mattress will still be dry in the morning!ameriken wrote:Geez, why mess with all that turning the machine off and on, taking the mask off and on, or popping the hose off and on. My dog flipped out about that once or twice when he saw me coming back to bed in my fancy attire. Silly dog! Why didn't he remember I had it on when I went to bed??Slartybartfast wrote:The thought of someone slinking around the house in the dead of night with a CPAP mask and hose extension on conjures up all kinds of scenarios about horrific shooting accidents due to "friendly fire."
Pad Thai is oh, so delicious. I thought the subject line was about "Pot-tay-toe" vs "Pot-tay-tuh"Slartybartfast wrote:Oh, and it's "Pad-Thai," not "Pot-tay." Delicious noodle dish found in Thai restaurants.
I turn my machine off, disconnect the hose from the mask, go to the potty room, unhook the bottom hooks on my mask, do my potty business, get a drink of water, rehook the mask, and head back to bed.

Re: "Pot-tay" question
If you need a drink of water and you have a full face mask you can just dip the end of the hose in a glass of water and plug the exit holes with your hand and use it just like a straw, no need to take it off....
