Went to the Sleep doctor today

Post by Rickd1 » Wed Jul 06, 2011 6:49 pm

So I go to my sleep doctor today and I had some questions and I thought I could get some answers. Well guess what, he didn't have a clue about what I was asking. So I will ask them here.

1 What is RERA? I know what it stands for I'm not sure what it means and how do I fix the events?

2 What is Flow limitation index, whats the cause and how do I fix that?

3 What is periodic breathing, whats the cause and how do I fix that?

The answer from the doctor was for me to call Respirtonic and ask them. So if anyone here can help me understand I would be greatful..

Thanks for the help..

Run, don't walk! Get a real sleep doctor. You've either been blown off by someone who didn't want to take the time to answer your questions or your doc really didn't know. If the latter, you're wasting your time there.

There's a "Search" line farther up the page. I'd suggest you start using it. The answers are there. If you can't find them in the forum pages for whatever reason, there's always Google.

I WAS trying to help you......help yourself. That way, when the NEXT person asks, YOU can help THEM.

You know the definitions. That part is easy.
The other part is not so easy. The clinician manual goes into a little bit of explanation but I agree, is not hugely helpful for those wanting precise and thorough explanations as to how each impacts things.

I have looked for more details on RERA and really have not found much.
Flow limitations are exactly what the clinical manual says it is. A decrease in flow and probably because of partial small airway collapse but we have no way of knowing what is the exact cause.
PB Cheyenne Stokes Respiration a special breathing pattern the machine scores. Cause? Who knows as again several possibilities. I see it scored every now and then myself.

We don't always get to or should try to "fix it". It depends on just how much of any of those 3 categories is showing on the reports if we should even worry about it. Occasional scoring of any of those items will happen from time to time and is "normal". Now if you have huge numbers in those items, different story.

I have searched quite a bit for more in depth information on all the items you question. Specific details are sparse and I haven't found any place that gives a set value range for what is acceptable. This software was designed for the medical community who are supposed to have the background knowledge to understand the scoring ranges. If your doctor doesn't have an answer then he lacks the knowledge which unfortunately is common. A really good RT probably would have a better understanding if they worked with this stuff all the time.

I finally just had to accept the fact that I could not find the detailed information I wanted and accepted the fact that a few of such scored events are going to happen even with the most optimal therapy.

You have already seen the same information that we on the forum have seen. If it isn't enough to satisfy you and it bugs you then keep searching. You might stumble on something we have missed.

Thanks I really had a hard time finding alot of info about this I don't have alot of events but would like to know a bit more I think the real reason for my post was in discuss with the doctor. I'm going to try a new doctor.
