Dental Problems and CPAP??

Post by sleeplessinthevalley » Mon Jul 04, 2011 11:26 am

I am a new user of CPAP, 3 weeks. I use the hose an average of 7.5 hours per night and although I do have a few wrinkles to work out, I feel much better. I changed sleep Docs because of ins. He wanted me on a nasal mask until my next titration in 10 days. I am currently using the Zest nasal mask.

My question is that my teeth seem to be out of allignment for the first 15 to 20 min. after I wake up. Then my bite goes back to normal. Yesterday I popped off an old crown on an upper mollar. I go to the dentst every 6mo. ,the last time in June, and have not had a cavity for years. Who knows, the crown may have just been ready to go. Does anyone else feel as though their teeth are out of allignment when they first wake up?

I did the same thing but I broke off three in the space of 6 months . Its not alignment its you clenching or grinding your teeth. You can make an effort to relax and done't clench your jaw...hard thing to do with a new procedure to learn, but give it a try. If that doesn't work you may need a boil & bite..like the kids use for football and such to keep their teeth from getting bashed in.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

According to some studies CPAP masks can cause misalignemnt of teeth and jaws in the long term, just like MAD devices. It exerts some pressure on jaws so it is possible to cause such temporary misalignment. When I was using MAD device I often had strange feeling that my teeth are weird, but I also had a retainer that helps them get back to former alignment.

Since starting to use nasal pillows last Fall I've developed gaps between my upper front teeth. And they hurt every morning.
I'm really trying not to clench my teeth, but can't stop it while I'm asleep. I don't think I'd be able to use the bite device as I have a really bad gag reflex (I could never wear my retainer back when I had braces for more than a few minutes at a time).

I really don't want to get braces again, but I hate the look of the gaps.
My AHI is wonderful with the pillows, better than with my previous full-face mask,
