Nasal Prongs

Post by TimWK » Sun May 22, 2011 5:00 pm

I’m considering switching from a FF mask to a Nasal Prong mask. Does anyone have experience with this type of mask? I’m a side sleeper with facial hail and am trying to stop leeks. My pressure is 15 to 20 cmH2O. Any input to help me make a decision is appreciated.

Best Regards

I have been using the Nasal Aire II for three years. It is a great mask. It is sometimes hard for some to get used to. You often have to give it time for the nose to get over being a bit sore but it will toughen up and really do great. Ary Gel helps in this. I love the fact that it has no straps to adjust. There are several ways to wear it and you can find the way that works best for you. One big plus is that I can read with it and even scratch my nose if it itches.

I have a Nasal Aire II and have used it a fair amount. I like it--minimal headgear and very stable. the only reason I don't use it as my main mask is that it is a bit noisier--it's a very high frequency noise and my husband can't even hear it, but I do. So it's a back up mask.

I've tried this mask, for about 2 hours
I could not handle it, first there was not really a way to have the hose come out from the nasal prongs and go directly up above my head and over my headboard (my hose management).
I didn't like side sleeping on a tube running along the side of my head.
I didnt like the longer length of hose between the hose connector and the actual prongs, increasing the chance of rainout.
My main concern was the prongs. I have sloted nares and not rounded, i think the prongs are better suited to rounded nares. The felt sore inside my nose and i don't think they created an even seal inside my nares.
The mask does come with the sizing tool but you can order one for $5 in advance if you want to check you size first.

However at your higher pressure they may fit better than standard pillows.

Good luck

I always wonder when I see someone post about "nasal prongs" if they really mean a nasal prong mask like the Nasal Aire, or do you mean nasal pillows as well?

Most of the time it will mean prongs like with the Nasal Aire unless user is newbie and doesn't know the difference between it and the pillows.

I tried the Nasal Aire II back in my experimenting days. Good enough concept but if the prongs don't fit perfectly it doesn't work too well. I ended up being in between sizes. One size was too small and even when inflated it would leak, next size up was larger and it just plain hurt too much. Didn't want to go into nostrils easily. They do go inside the nostril much further than the little tips of the pillows and they aren't nearly as forgiving in regards to leak and fitting. Don't have the wiggle room that we have with the pillows. Head gear adjustment can't make up for ill fitting prongs.

That's why I asked because the OP has only about 35 posts under his belt. I've seen people refer to nasal pillow masks as "nasal prongs" and "nasal cannulas" not recognizing that they are all different things.

Yep. I see your point especially since I just now noticed that OP didn't mention Nasal Aire only the "prongs".

I understand the difference between nasal prongs and nasal pillows. My present mask uses nasal pillows. I'm trying to decide if the prongs will seal better than the pillows.

I'd be cautious about the prongs. I am a current fan of the Opus nasal pillow system, though I do well with the hybrid mask seals as well on the nose (though the mouth part sadly leaks). I tried the prongs- to get a good seal, you'll be sore in the nose significantly until you can either mentally tough it out, or just build up nose callouses. A comfortable size in the nose will give a leak, which unlike nasal pillows, gives you the feeling of a leak INSIDE your nose. Personally, I can't sleep with something tickling the inside of my nose. My advice- if you can sleep with a large object up your nostril and aren't too sensitive in their, give this a try. Otherwise, move on to the next option.
