Any experience with the Zzzpap? Puresom? CPAP?

Post by digitaleagle » Tue Feb 15, 2011 11:59 pm

I just picked up a second CPAP machine new. The Carefusion Puresom CPAP. I was looking for the Zzzpap but none was in stock for the price I wanted to pay so I ended up with the Carefusion model. Both machines look like the exact same machines and in fact, have the exact same manuals online. The only difference I can see if one has a black case and mine has a white one. It is a very basic machine. No APAP, no CFLEX, etc. It is just a straight CPAP machine which is fine by me. It also has a basic ramp feature and it keeps track of total hours. I use a straight pressure of 6.5 and only wanted to use this for travel because of it's weight and size. I also wanted an emergency backup machine in case anything happened to my System One at home.

I read the reviews online for both machines and most were positive with comments like "very quiet" machine. This week was the first time I have traveled since I received it, so last night was the first night I tried it out. Well - it didn't go so well.

First the machine was much noisier than my PR System One. OK - so I thought. It is only $170.00 machine as opposed to my PR at home. But ..... it makes this whistling air sound with my Swift FX that drives me nuts. The sound resonates through the hose and pillows. It's most noticeable on exhale. Needless to say I was awakened by it most of last night. I was also uncomfortable without the CFLEX setting I'm used to on my System One. At home I use CFLEX+ at a setting of 1, which isn't much, but it was hard to get used to this machine at a constant pressure. It was like I was fighting with breathing all night.

Tonight I am going to back it down to 6 from 6.5 to see if this helps at all. Maybe I will get used to this? But the noise? I'm not so sure. It also has an electrical kind of smell to the air it puts out. I can't really describe it but others have noticed this in the reviews. I'm hoping this will go away over time.

I like the size of the machine to travel with it and really hope I can make it work. I really don't want to take my expensive System one on the road with me for obvious reasons - but now I'm questioning if this was a good decision. Maybe you really do get what you pay for. Doh!!!!

Let me know your thoughts - especially if you have experience with either of these machines. The vendor agreed to check it out if I sent it back to them. I don't want to do this if the machine is operating the way it should.

Thanks in advance for any advice you could give me here.

My dad needs a CPAP machine and since this is the first time I'm looking for these type of machines, I am totally lost.
Why did you need a second machine?
Do you have the ones with humidifier? If yes, does it make a huge difference?

The cheaper ones are the ones you've mentioned, but since there are no reviews I don't know if I should buy it or not.

Thanks for helping

I have this machine with the humidifier option, and I use it as a travel machine. It works very well for me, and I have not really noticed it being any louder than my main machine (F&P 608).

As far as the smell, I did notice a plasticky smell the first time I fired it up, but that dissipated very quickly.

My pressure is 13.5 and I don't have C-Flex or anything like that on my main machine. I don't use the ramp feature, I am just used to the high pressure I guess. I sleep like a baby with either machine!

Overall, I am very happy with mine as a travel/backup machine.

Two thoughts:

1- Could you already be missing the easy breathing feature on exhale your old machine offers?

2 - The FX has some very fine exhaust port holes which could get partially clogged with lint from travel, normal use, etc. Have you ever brushed the exhaust with a "SOFT" brush?

Don't have either machine but could be a common sense fix.

I ended up returning the machine and got one of the lower end models of the PR System one instead. I use the PR System One auto at home.

I wasn't happy with the noise or smell that the Zzzpap put out. I'm sure it works fine for others.
