Morning
so glad your mask is working for you
you are so lucky!
I think some people like to read in bed or watch tv and need glasses and that's why they like those in case they fall asleep. Just my opinion tho

Husband and I were awake all nite and I tired 3 masks.
Kept asking him the sounds i was making and he didn't know. Just kept waking him up.
The last one I tired at 3:30 was the Mariage Quattro and it had crusted drule on the right side and i was aware of rapid shallow breathing with mouth wide open and breathing through the mouth.
Mouth totally dry and sore throat I guess from snoring.
To see the sleep tecq. today and pray he has some answers from the machine I used at home for 5 days.
I feel again like i've had no sleep at all and alot of pressure in the center of my chest. There was so much belching for long periods of time when i first woke up so guess I was taking in alot of air.

Thanks for listening.
Judy

My second night with the Mirage FX went much better as I thought it would. Good AHI and the leakage was in the "excellent" range.

Please let us know what your tech says to you today. We can all learn something new or reaffirm something old.

I suspect as allergy season for me grows worse, my mouth will inadvertently open more and more. I'm not real crazy about trying a chin strap. If the alternative later is a full face mask, I may need to check with you for advice. Thanks.

Best of both worlds....a Respcare/Innomed Hydrid, it uses pillows and a mouth cover. There is also the Liberty but I haven't tried that one, have had great success with the hybrid so that one is now my favorite.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

If you're having problems getting adjusted (physically or mentally) to sleeping with CPAP, daytime practice may help you get used to CPAP. Your mind gets used to the feel of the mask and pressure. It seems it would especially help if you're getting panicky about breathing and claustrophobia. Your body also gets adjusted to the pressure, especially in terms of being able to exhale comfortably.

Acclimatization and in case you fall asleep are the only reasons I see to do daytime CPAP.

Well, it would also add hours of "compliance time" if you have insurance concerns, but there are real benefits if you are having problems doing enough CPAP.

If you are having problems with your mouth opening while you are asleep, many here tape their mouths closed. Just double the tape over on at least one side so you can get it off quickly if need be. I used micropore surgical tape on my mouth for about a week, and found that when I tried to sleep without the tape, no more sore throat or snoring, so apparently I have taught myself to sleep with my mouth closed. Some people felt the tape made their lips sore, so some people apply a thin coat of Milk Of Magnesia (aka MOM) to their lips and allowed it to dry, then taped. The MOM protects without making the tape fall off.

Many people read or watch TV with their masks and CPAP machine on, because it helps, wespecially newbies, to get acclimated to it before trying to sleep with it. Yes, some people fall asleep while reading or watching TV and at least this way you don't have to wake up and apply your gear for safe sleep.

I am glad you are getting used to the mask quickly and that you are using it, hopefully every night.

Just a quick thank you. I am the webmaster, owner, founder, writer, cameraman, "star"....etc for freecpapadvice

I noticed a substantial boost in page views as well as some very nice comments from people about my website. I think I have found the source for the increase in views!

Thank you thank you thank you. There is quite a bit of information there, and I am new at webdesign, so the layout (though an improvement) is horrible at best.

I have several new masks I am in the process of reviewing, as well as a new mask review website that I hope has a better layout that is easy to navigate and is strictly for CPAP masks. Anyway....blah blah blah.

There are quite a few very nice masks out there. It is just very difficult to get some home health care companies to show them to you. Sounds like you are all on to some great choices in masks. Mask designs are becoming much more user friendly with great design features. I am personally a ResMed snob. I just find that the designs are better for patients, they are durable, the silicone they use for the cushions are the best.

My new favorite masks (two I'm reviewing right now) Mirage FX and the Quattro FX. Great choices.

All time favorite is the Mirage Vista. Great for side sleeping. Easy to seal. No claustrophobic feeling having a forehead rest, not to mention one less pressure point you have to worry about. The headgear is easy to get on and off as well as adjust, but it can be tricky at first.

I love forums like this. Users and professionals coming together to exchange ideas. Happy mask hunting!

Best regards,

Jason

I have been through three masks in two weeks. Ask your DME what the rules are regarding changing masks in the first 30 days. My changes were free because of not liking the other masks. You will learn a lot by trying different masks. Be aware that the masks they offer depend on your insurance. e.g. The therapist said, "If you were on medicare, I would suggest this one, on Blue Cross, I would suggest this one..."

First mask was Swift FX nasal pillows. Either because I was new to the sport or because of the design, it could not handle the higher pressure (15cmH20).
Second mask was the Mirage Activa, which gave me much, much better results than the first one. My main complaint here was the exhaust stream is so strong at the higher pressures. I spent too much time trying to change the direction of the out-flow.
Third was the Mirage Activa LT which is a smaller, lighter version of the Mirage Activa. They changed the exhaust and removed the extra hose required on Activa. This one looks like a keeper.

Taping your mouth

Post by archangle » Wed Jun 01, 2011 11:55 am

There's a risk of suffocation death if you tape your mouth and power or the machine fails if you don't wake up. Ask your doctor about it.

Quite a few people here tape anyway. If any of them have died from it, their survivors haven't known about this board and reported it.

Jason can't thank you enough for your site. I had to cut some of your quote as my reply kept jumping out of site.
I got so much info from your site and also love when sites and forums come together to help each other. I am learning all new terms here.
thanks again

I often like to unwind by reading or watching television before I try to fall asleep. If I am already using my CPAP before I begin engaging in these activities, I don't have to worry about the possibility of sleeping unprotected if I happen to fall asleep. I'm glad that the Mirage FX worked well for you.

Picked up a chin strap today to keep my mouth closed; allergies are giving me a little congestion.

Chin strap worked well. No dry mouth in the morning. So far so good.
