I don't know if Adderall is anything like Cocaine (I assume your daughter must have tried both to be able to say that... Hopefully you keep your Adderall in a place that is not accessible to her). However, one should not be taking exceedingly high doses of Adderall or injecting it or snorting it or whatever, and therefore one should not get the same effects that someone who is abusing it would get.
Amphetamine (Adderall(r) is a mixture of 4 amphetamine salts) and cocaine don't have the same physical structure and have some differences. Chief among these is that cocaine is a highly effective topical anesthetic and amphetamines aren't. However, they both increase dopamine within synapses.

Provigil and Nuvigil do not increase dopamine at all.

Doctor shopping to procure prescriptions is harder than going to your friendly neighborhood coke dealer. The coke dealer is less likely to turn you in to the police as he (or she) wants to stay out of trouble themselves. Doctors who discover you're shopping around for prescriptions for recreational use turn you in pretty much all the time. I also suspect that adderall probably isn't as "good" as cocaine from the abuser's perspective. Never tried either, so I can't report from personal experience.

As for me, the high feeling has diminished and i don't feel like running around saying "wheee" all the time anymore. That's a good thing.

mstevens, I am really glad to know about the dopamine thing, as I have a vague idea of how that works.

I started talking Nuvigil 3mths ago (250mg) to get me out of a BP2 depression. I had the same experience as above. I felt high,(like speed) felt great, got things done etc. Afer about 2mths it has either stopped working for me or just evened out. I am not sure which. My insurance does not pay for it so am paying $299.00mth. It was worth it at first but now I want to stop and I am VERY worried about withdrawals. I am very interested to hear if anyone has stopped or tappered off this drug and what happened. I'm actually scared to stop. I'm getting this months filled just in case.

I've taken both Nuvigil and Provigil PRN (as needed) and had no problems stopping. I suppose in theory you could get some rebound sleepiness, but I don't know if that applies to these agents or more to traditional stimulants taken over the long term.

I have taken both, and just want to tell those of you who are taking it that there is a coupon on the internet if you just google "Nuvigil", and the coupon lowers your out of pocket cost for I think 6 months of refills, maybe more. It would have cost me about $77 monthly with my insurance co-pay, but with the coupon it costs about $27.00 a month. And I think you can get a week of them free too. I noticed both of these drugs helped me to stay awake but at the cost of constant tongue soreness. I could take half when I got up and if i wanted to, another half about 4 hours later, to keep me awake to work all day. I prefer to make mine last about 2 months or more, so only took 1/2 of a 250 mg pill daily until i got my CPAP machine. I did not have any trouble coming off of either of them. I only used the drug on days when I was working a full day, so rarely ever on a weekend. The speedy-like side effect does tend to wear off the longer you use either of these drugs. My Dr will no longer order it now that my sleep disorder issues are being addressed with CPAP.

I take NuVigil for Narcolepsy... i dont have an extreme case of narcolepsy, but its enough to affect me daily.. however i also have whats called cataplexy, again, not to an extreme case. however, i too get that same tripping sensation... here is what i have come up with.. at first i think the blurred vision and muscle spasms are associated with the cataplexy, and that tends to happen as the medication kicks in and if i decide to try and fight it.. for some reason, it wants to knock me out for a little while, an hour or so.. not exactly sure why, but it might have something to do with the correlation between my nerve muscle problem and the narcolepsy (which are technically related but not everyone has that...) well, occasionally, and im thinking this has to do with how narcolepsy affects your REM sleep, just early today, i fell asleep after taking it and above mentioned side effects.. so now that i know what happens, i take it well before i have to do anything. as i let my self fall asleep i feel pretty relaxed, but do feel the meds making my muscles twitch a little. after about 20 min or so i kept having crazy dreams and im assuming id shake it off by waking up, however, i would see and hear things not there, for example, my mom walking by talking to me, as i was alseep on the couch... well id get up bc she said lets go, ill take you to run your errand, i shake it off and no one is there.. not only that, why would she even be at my house, but its my mom so i was well, okay... i dreamed my dog was walking around and needed to go outside, so i sat up... no dog, and house is dark and empty.. then off the wall things like, theses two girls who were somehow in my house and came to take care of me bc i felt like i was tripping balls. lol. at the time i was like what the fuck is going on, and knew i was asleep and shouldn't be seeing this. i think if you are taking this stuff and have narcolepsy or another sleep disorder, bc its designed to stimulate your mind and keep you up, but makes (me at least) crash hard for about an hour, its making your mind dream on another level, including these little hallucinations.. me growing up being a party kid, and experimenting with acid, mushrooms, dxm, mescaline, 2ci, among other party favors, the trips dont scare me or bother me, ive always thought it fascinating to see what my mind comes up with, sometimes its very odd shit. however if i wasn't a fan it would probably scare the crap out of me. just my insight.. not sure how normal this is for this drug, but im curious to find out myself. ill do a little more looking into it and post later on if i find something. thnx.

I think it's pretty safe to say it's not.

Nuvigil's mechanisms of action is primarly three fold. It increases the levels of histamine globally within the brain leading to an increase in acetlycholine(A stimulating neurotransmitter involved in Alzhiemers and Cognition). It increases Serotonin at a number of excititory sub-receptors such as 5 htp 2a 2b in certian areas of the brain pertaining to cognition-I foreget which. Plus it also DOES INHIBIT DOPAMINE REUPTAKE in various areas of the brain such as the stratum which modify the effects of Dopamine in the Nucleous Accumbens(Pleasure Center). While it does not appear to act on the midbrain as amphetamines, MPH(Ritalin ect); or the nucleous Accumbens directly...It does increase the effects Dopamine in the Nucleous Accumbens and thus is a Schedule III narcotic. May very well become a schedule II. The Dopamine connection is evident to me rite now (350 mg moderate euphoria) increased stimulation:) And I have Narcalepsy/ADD!!! DOSE CURVE at around 250 mg:) Big difference between 200 and 300 mg. I've been prescribed amphetamines as well- And they CAN, CAN be more euphoric if administered in certain ways lol or, with very high doses.
