I use Vick's but I don't think it consumes the room or anything. Unless you are using a lot. Can you try one night and if it bothers her, you can use less?

I have used Vicks and my hubby hasn't complained -- but then again he is a heavy smoker and probably wouldn't smell the city dump if he was standing in the middle of it (although he strongly denies the cigs are doing damage to his body --- he just can't get rid of that nasty cold that has been lingering for the last couple of years )

I looked at the label to see if it is a petroleum product - and it has "special petrolatum" - which sounds like a derivative. Will this hurt the mask and tubeing . .. or seals in the cpap machine?

It is ok if it doesn't touch them. You put some on a pad beside the air intake.

Vicks is pretty weak. I prefer Tiger balm or the pure eucalyptus oil.

"Clear" by Pur-sleep dot com works for me, and although my spouse says he can smell it, it doesn't offend him or make him nauseous. All it takes is one drop, every night, on a wafer (available from Pur-Sleep with the diffuser kit or refill diffuser kit) sitting behind the air filter on my CPAP machine. I have tried Eucalyptus Oil instead, and find it doesn't help my nose stay clear all night, like Clear. Your spouse should be happy you are looking for alternate ways to keep your nostrils clear so you can breathe! A well-rested spouse is less likely to have mood-swings and illness, and that should make her happy! Pur-Sleep has ordering available by internet or phone and ships quickly.

While I like the Pur-Sleep "Clear" very much and use it often, I've found that the "Calm" keeps my nasal passages clearer. Pur-Sleep has quite a few different essential oil blends so you should be able to find one which works for you.

It's probably best to stay away from anything with camphor in it. Camphor is toxic to the liver and the FDA has restricted use of camphor to topical applications. Menthol and eucalyptus oil (eucalyptol) are safer alternatives and smell just as . . . well, not sweet, but cool.

I agree that Pur-Sleep is the way to go. The *pure* essential oils are meant to be breathed.

There are many articles you can find regarding camphor and other ingredients in Vicks Vaporub that make it less than ideal for breathing. Here is one: http://www.livestrong.com/article/11205 ... -warnings/

Forget the Vick's. I spent a week in Memphis a while back. Somehow I gravitate toward the idea of a little dollop of barbecue sauce on a cotton ball next to the air intake.

Mmmmm . . . barbecue!

how to describe it yet as my trial with Vicks was a failure, I could barely smell it. I will keep
you posted. I know all my fans are waiting with baited breath. Wow, that would be a super
cool name for this forum, "Baited Breath". Don't anyone use it as I'm gonna patent it and I don't
want to have to sue you!
So how did the Tiger Balm work for you (and your spouse?)

I'm guessing he meant "bated breath"...
