Someone please give me update on flying with CPAP

Post by SleepingUgly » Sat May 14, 2011 3:22 pm

I know there have been lots of threads about this, but it seems the requirements/security changes. What do I need to know if I'm going to take CPAP with me (NOT use it on the flight, just carry it on)?

P.S. I assume it is allowed in addition to my one allowed carry-on...?

As long as your bag has only your XPAP and related equipment in it, it does not count against your carryon limit. If they question your number of bags, tell them what it is and remind them it's medical equipment. You're good to go.

SmartLink module works, but software doesn't, so I'm using SleepyHead. Thanks, JediMark!

Nothing has changed. It does not count as your carry-on as long as it ONLY contains medically-necessary items. Gate agents recognize the common CPAP bags (for the most part) and don't even question them.

Some TSA agents require you to take the machine out of the bag and some don't. That is a slight relaxation of the initial procedure, but is not universal. I haven't had mine "swabbed" in months.

Do you send them on the belt through the scanner or hand it over separately?

On the belt, usually in a gray bin...just like your purse, laptop, etc.

This is exactly how it went for me on my last trip. No problems at all.

One TIP: You can usually get pre-boarding at the gate by telling the agent you have medical equipment that must stay with you. That will ensure you have space for it in the overhead bin.

Current regulations can be found at tsa.gov.

You can bring a see through plastic bag to put your machine in when it goes in the gray bin, to avoid contact with other people's germs. You can also request that the TSA agent put new gloves on before handling your machine, also to avoid other people's germs.

When I flew about two months ago (first time with my BiPAP), I had things other than my BiPAP and related equipment in the bag and no one said anything about it. Course, maybe no one knew about it since I pulled all of it out of my bag and put it in a gray bin so I could get my machine out.

I just go back and it was no problem at all.

I carried on my purse, a carry on bag to shove under the seat in front of me, and my C-pap to put in the overhead.

They want you to take out just the blower and put it in a bin by it's self.
Then the machine bag in another bin with your shoes, coat or sweater, belt, cell phone and a small baggie with anything over 4 oz in it....not a large one I made that mistake. They yelled at me!!!! can you believe that?

Wear socks as the floor was not very clean.

I was worried the whole trip that I would leave without my c-pap from the overhead. Ofcourse I remembered it because I was so worried I wouldn't.

Have a good trip, I hope it's for pleasure.

Never had a problem transporting my cpap during air travel. I do have a medical tag attached to it with my name but it never is checked by security.

Last month I flew from Islip to Ft. Lauderdale. The TSA simply asked me to open my case and put it in a bin to go through the scanner. I did not have to take the machine out. When I opened it he yelled to his partner to look at it and said the machines are looking nicer and nicer. His partner said, "Pretty slick"

I took a cruise through the Panama Canal ending at San Diego. On the cruise, at breakfast, if I looked I could see the mask marks on several people each day. The chief engineer had a Q & A in the theater and someone said that the only plugs in the cabins were all the way across the room from the beds. He said he had to take out and put away an extension cord each night. He asked, "Why can't there be plugs next to the bed?" Some in the audience said yeah me too. The chief engineer said that was an excellent question and that he would recommend plugs by the beds for the ship's upcoming $25 million rehab. (always take an 8' extension cord and sometimes even have to use it in my hotel)

At San Diego I was told to take only the blower out and put it on top of my case in the bin to make the trip through the scanner.

Upon boarding neither Southwest nor American even noticed I was carrying 2 carry ons. ResMed makes a nice case and they probably thought it was my Man Bag. If you are flying American, you might want to take LinkC's suggestion about pre-boarding because since they started to charge for checked baggage, everyone tries to bring all their stuff in the cabin and the overheads are all stuffed full before the last 1/4 of passengers get on.

I think I read something about Resmed S9 machines being approved to use in flight on certain planes and with certain carriers.
If I were planning an overnight flight, I would make sure before purchasing my ticket.

I have to fly (international) soon. I would like to take my CPAP (to live), my laptop (for work), and my camera (for fun), but that makes three bags I would have to carry with me. And although I might technically be allowed to carry that stuff, I'm afraid one pedantic security or airline person somewhere along the line might decide to object, and I'll have to check one. No way am I willing to risk that. (I've watched how some baggage handlers throw stuff around.) So, no fun. I totally hate air travel post 9/11.

Put your camera and laptop in the same bag. Put nothing but CPAP equipment and supplies in the other. They can't say a thing.

In fact, you would still be authorized a "personal Item"...
