Fyi: Serial Cables that work to download data for Adapt SV

Post by sleepgem » Tue Feb 01, 2011 1:01 am

Hi,

If anyone is looking for serial cable (with USB extension) to download data from ResMed Adapt SV, following are the cables that definitely work with ResMed Adapt SV appliance:

Here's the null modem cable:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?p_id=477

If you don't have a DB9 Serial port, then you will also need the following cable to connect to USB port:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?p_id=2276

They are amazingly cheap compared to what my DME/ResMed wanted me to pay (ridiculous $60 for Serial-USB cable and $30 for serial cable). Thanks to JohnBFisher for pointing out these cables.

HTH,
SleepGem

I got the cables but the ResScan software will not recognize the VPAP Adapt SV machine. Any ideas what's wrong?

Make sure you have the null modem cable or a null modem adaptor (available from Radio Shack). I had the same problem. Good luck.

Well Radio Shack said the cable was a null modem but I have no way of knowing for sure. I may just order the cables you suggested. Before I waste the money, I do want to make sure that ResScan will give me my AHI readings from an Adapt SV machine. I have a printout my DME gave me a couple of years ago and while all sorts of info is in there but there is no AHI data.

I had the "A" version with the alarms. It did not give AHI, or AI. The fine print said that info was "not available in the US version". It took an email to ResMed and a little wait before I found out. It was a puzzle to the rep who knew nothing about the data it gave. It reported the AHI and Ai as 0.0 instead of saying something like "no data" so it was very confusing and distressing to me. Here I had this high tech, expensive machine and no way to tell if it was working.
If you have the null moden cable I don't know why it won't recognize the machine. I had that same problem until I got the null modem adaptor.

Is there a way of telling if I have the "A" version? The machine is 4 years old. I sure don't want to spend any more time or money on this if I can't get AHI numbers.

The old style "serial" ports are properly called "RS-232" ports.

The way equipment and software manufacturers abuse "RS-232" is a shame. Many devices, and especially cables don't follow the standards. Software often does it wrong. The user has to configure a lot of stuff correctly, both on the computer and device end.

Cable manufacturers often leave out some of the wires and pins that are "usually" unused. This can be a problem because some devices DO actually need these connections. Be sure when you buy a cable that it has all the signal lines wired up.

Microsoft Windows, in particular, screws a lot of stuff up. Especially when you go from one version of windows to the next.

Most PCs these days don't have RS-232 ports and you have to use a USB to RS-232 converter like the one listed above. These are often further abominations. Microsoft windows support for the converters is also awful.

Even if you are a computer guru who knows what you're doing, there's a lot of tinkering, experimentation, and dumb luck involved. You'll often find nothing will work for what you need.

Hmmm... A couple things.

First, your equipment list does not show the Resmed VPAP Adapt SV. If you do not have the Resmed VPAP Adapt SV (or the newer Resmed S9 VPAP Adapt SV) unit, then the Resmed software won't find it.

However, I assume that you either have a backup unit, or might have selected a "closest fit" for the equipment list.

Second, if you have a Resmed VPAP Adapt SV unit, then look on top. If it has the word "Enhanced" above the Alarm Mute button on the bottom right side of the control panel for the unit, then it will provide AHI numbers. If you do not have the word "Enhanced", it does not record AHI numbers.

Either way, the null modem cables listed do work.

Hope that helps.

The "A" version says Adapt SV-A. I forgot to say I was using a USB connection rather than a serial connection.

Well mine is the old one, so no use spending any more time or money. I wanted to get my AHI's off that machine. I'm having difficulty with my new machine (Respironics BiPap Auto SV Advanced) and wanted to be able to show my sleep doctor a comparison of AHI's.

Thanks for all the advice.

I've got the same problem.
I spent the day learning how to install Windows XP on my MacBookPro Snow Leopard.
Then I had to learn how to install the ResScan software.
Now I'm ready for bed again. This would be tiring even without apnea!

There are no devices for downloading data

Connect a flow generator or data card and try again
I get this message when I try to download the data.
Anybody got any idea what I am doing wrong?
