Two Years!

Post by BlackSpinner » Mon May 02, 2011 5:56 pm

I was so busy with painting and renovating and the yard work and preparing for the exhibition that I missed my two year anniversary!

This year has been horrendous and without my cpap I don't think I would have survived the stress. I have been surviving quite nicely on about 5 -6 hours of sleep (and 2-3 hours of chewing the insomnia nails due to issues outside of my control).
At the end of this week I am heading out to Edmonton to spend probably 6 weeks looking after my parents while my sister recovers from the nightmare of the winter health issues and wrenching her back catching my mother from falling. My roommates will look after my dog and cat - they have each "adopted" one and they have to plant the seeds I started in the garden at the end of May. My biggest regret is that I will miss the art show and one of the pieces is not finished. I am hoping to have enough gumption to hit some galleries in Edmonton with my portfolio.

Belated congratulations, Lena! The time flies, doesn't it?

Enjoy your trip to Edmonton. I trust you'll be checking in here from time to time while you're away? The no-nonsense 2x4 is a necessity around here at times (and always quite entertaining when wielded by you).

I hope you do hit those galleries! The worst they can say is "no," and you don't strike me as the type of woman who crumbles when met with a hurdle. (But you're also an artist, and I get that. )

I say go for it!

Congratulations, on the anniversary, and make sure to pop in here while you're in Edmonton. Don't forget to take care of yourself too.

Thanks - Yes I will be on line from Edmonton - They have like 5 computers there, my father was a computer science instructor at the local college and mom was doing government library data base searches over the Internet before it was the Internet LOL. She can't handle the computer anymore but dad has a 42 inch tv screen hooked up to his so he can surf from his bed.

Somehow when it comes to galleries and my art work it is like hitting below the belt. My art work is very personal to me and their rejection of my art just gets deep under my skin.

Your life has really required adaptability of you this past year. When you were going through the changes with your daughter relocating far away and you moving, I was going into a similar period myself. I wish times were easier for you, but I did draw comfort in the sense of not being the only one and seeing you pave the way with how you handled the changes.

May the time with your parents turn out to be more of a blessing than a chore. Take care of yourself the best you can in all this, because you'll be no good to anyone (including yourself) if not. Keep us posted.
Kathy

P.S. I LOVE you dad's setup of his computer - wish I had THAT!

I too will be in Edmonton, but only for 10 days, have to attend a hospital auxiliary health conference next week and am working in a visit with my sister in law. Sooooo loooking forward to the visit, its been a tough year here too and I need the break. Congrats on you 2 year anniversary, I was so busy I missed my 1 year .

There is a knitting group that meets on Tuesdays evenings not far from my parents house that I will be patronizing. I may get to some downtown too.

Yes that was rough. Now the youngest is un employed and not focusing well - repeating what one has done for a year without results is not smart. I am having to tough love that one and if she ends up on my couch that is ok but no more money. I just don't have it and she knows it. In that way it is good I am out of town.

I now have 2 roommates so the rent is covered. When I get back I will have to find something part time so I can eat.

I am glad my issues helped you deal with yours.

In a way, artists (including performing artists) practice the most honest profession. Once you put your product in a gallery--or stand up before an audience--everyone can see what you can do. Any kind of pretense that you're somehow more than you are is impossible. And there's no avoiding the fact that some people won't like your stuff.

It takes courage, precisely because some rejection is inevitable. But the rewards must be greater than the pain, or there wouldn't be professional artists. Obviously, there are people who do like your work, Spinner, and I'm one of them. Whenever you've been rejected, remember that we're out here.
