Two questions...

Post by psdyer » Wed Apr 20, 2011 2:56 pm

First week to use my CPAP mask and machine. Has anyone experienced the following problems with their machine; if so, what am I doing wrong?

1) 1st two nights I woke up with extreme soarness in my torso. (Similar pain to the gas doctors blow you up for surgery)
2) I have asthma as well as sleep apnea. Something has given me a cold (sinus infection) since I began using the CPAP machine.

Any suggestions what I'm doing wrong?

Please add your equipment to your Profile.
Go to the User Account control, top left, Profile then Equipment tab. Please list in TEXT from the drop down menu exactly which equipment you are using. Images are tiny and we can't see at a glance what you use. This helps us help you better and faster so that we don't have to ask is time....these questions...

Which machine are you using? What pressure is being used?
Are you using a humidifier? If so at what settings?

Abdominal pain/discomfort? Especially in the AM but can last all day? Is it like abdominal gas? See if this is similar to what you feel.
Google aerophagia as this is common complaint with cpap therapy and lots of ideas on reducing its impact if you think the discomfort sounds like this..

wiki/index.php/Aerophagia

Sinus infection symptoms or cold symptoms i.e. congestion, drainage, runny nose, sneezing, pressure, pain, etc
can be a result of humidifier use or non use. Each person has their own requirements of how much moisture is or is not needed to keep the nasal mucosa happy. If you are using a humidifier at a high setting turn it down, if using at lower setting try turning it up a bit.. Some people do better with nothing or just water and no added heat. It is common and trial an error is only way to figure out what works best for you.

You could also have simply caught a cold (bad timing) but if no other cold symptoms (body aches, sore throat,.....) might be the humidifier thing.

Aerophagia. That's what it is. I had a LOT of this when I first starting to use CPAP. I know exactly what you mean by your description of gas used during surgery. I have had laporoscopic abdominal surgery 4 times. It is very painful! When I first started on CPAP, every morning I would sit on my recliner while I ate my breakfast and pass a LOT of gas.. My teenagers were mortified!!
I tried lowering my pressure on my machine and it really helped. I would talk with your doctor first, since you are new to this. But this is not unusual.
Just very unpleasant.

Worth the price of admission, right there! My teenager is mortified by the whole CPAP machine. We are planning our first vacation since I started on CPAP and she is mortified to think that she has to share a hotel room with me on my machine--until I remind her what it would be like without the machine

I love giving her something to be embarassed about!
