Question for seasoned pillows users

Post by jimnsc » Mon Apr 18, 2011 6:47 am

I'm using a Swift FX and really do like it. It came to me with the medium pillows in place and I did well with it. Last night I tried the large pillows because I liked the way they looked around my nares (the overlap). When I first began using the FX I got some soreness with a very loose mask. I can still feel the effects when the mask is on me. Last night though, there was zero pressure from the large pillows and absolutely no tenderness felt using them. As information, my leakage has been negligible with both sizes and no change observed in the pressure required. Funny though, last night is the first night I have had ZERO apnea events scored - only hypopneas.

Question - Should I just go ahead and admit to my Jimmy Durante genes and use the large pillows or could this possibly have been a fluke and might be too early to tell?

Use what is most comfortable. Sounds like you can use both but maybe the Large is just a bit more comfortable.
No apneas may have just been a coincidence or it may have been related to the pillows.
If it is a vanity thing....remember there are women using the large pillows also.

I use the large FX pillows too but I have a fairly small nose. They just seal better and feel better.

Oddly enough for the Swift LT, I use the medium pillows.

Thanks to you both - I had the very same experience with both masks, Docweezy. Guess I'll do the large pillows again tonight. As always, Pugsy, you come through for me.

Hmm, neither can I but my first thought was how come we never see condom sizes in "Small"? It's always Large, super large, etc. If that is the best I can do today, I guess I had better go pull some weeds and mow the yard or I am going to get into big trouble today.

Sometimes we answer our own questions.

I find the large pillows more comfortable for breathing out, but I get better numbers with medium. I assume it could be because the medium pillows create a touch more back-pressure against my exhalation and keep the pressure in my airway slightly higher during it (sorta like the Provent thingies). That is only an assumption on my part based on personal observations with my own therapy.

Do you suppose the large pillows are for women with big hair?

I am also going back and forth between large and medium. I am leaning toward the large as the mediums are more noisy and breathing feels more labored. I thought I was getting more leakage from the large pillows, but I now think it might be mouth leakage. I will keep looking for the "perfect" solution, I hope it is out there somewhere....

Won't we all, Dennis? Never satisfied - always looking for ways to get better numbers. However, if I get to where some say they are usually - 1.?, I think I could tolerate boredom from using the same pressures, masks, etc.

I have a tiny Meg Ryan nose so mine is an extra small pillow

This is interesting. I only ever got the medium size, so have not tried the large. But I do find them 'noisy', and now am wondering if I should try the large ones. I don't have any leakage with the medium ones, so would it be worth buying them just to try? The pillows are about $80/3 here. And they did NOT last 18 monts (as the sleep clinic claimes), rather about 3 so far. But maybe I'm breathing them too hard?

jnk... I don't think you have to come up with a joke...my mind went there anyway!
But on topic.... I switched from small to Med. on the Opus 360 pillows. Better seal, less eye irritation, and no whistle on exhale. Have never gone back.
Do what works...

Funny you mention this because I was just thinking of trying a large. I have tried the medium and they seal, but every time I roll over they come loose. Plus, I don't feel like I get enough air. I wear a medium in the LT and they look about the same size. If the large work for you, I would go for it!
