Swift FX Nasal Pillows Success

Post by jimnsc » Tue Apr 12, 2011 8:56 am

This my be a little premature but I'm itching to tell it anyway. I had just about resigned myself to the fact I was a mouth breather who had some less than desirable experiences with several nasal pillows masks, and destined to spend the rest of my treatment in an FFM. Last night I made my last try using a brand new Swift FX and I made it through an entire night. I wouldn't have tried to make it a "whole night affair" had I not had some good experiences in the afternoon just napping in it.

I did take extra precaution though and also wore a CPAP Cap which probably made me successful. My leak information was beautiful. Tonight I'm going to try it without the cap to just see what happens. I'll have some 3M Blue Painter's Tape (2080-EM for delicate surfaces) standing by if needed, as well as the cap. I'm just hoping for an eventual "less mess on my face." Nothing wrong with dreaming, is there? I no longer believe I'm a terminal mouth breather though. As you can see, I really pay attention to your posts and I want to thank you all for your input to my success at this. I have that good HoseBuddy a day away from me thanks to those who responded to how they routed their hoses for the FX. This is the place to be!!!

I used to have a happy dance gif but I can't find it now, so I will let your imagination see me doing the happy dance for you.

Curious though. Seems some people have said that the pillows cause discomfort. Since this was new to you, did you notice any nostril discomfort?

I'm not sure I would try to apply painter's tape in the middle of the night lying in bed if I woke up doing the blowfish, but I'm kind of a klutz in the dark... Do you mean you'll have a piece of the #2080-EL precut and ready to apply?

Great news, though. I loves me my Swift FX too.

I love the Swift FX too. It's my lifeline to a decent night's sleep. I've tried the no tape, no papcap routine. I would not recommend it. It's just frustrating. I've been taping the last week or so. The cap is slipping forward and I can't seem to figure out how to fix that. I recommend that you use chapstick on your lips before taping. I'm still using the Nexcare Gentle Paper tape from walgreen's. At some point, I will get the blue painters tape with edge lock. I may try that tonight as I'm taking vacation the rest of this week.

Glad you've found a mask that is working for you!!!

I also use a Swift FX and PAPcap. I tried without the cap some time ago, thinking, "Surely after two years, I have trained myself to keep my mouth shut. Nope--and don't call me Shirley."

Good for you!

I too, love the Swift FX.

I know that I was a mouth breather when I was using a mask over my nose... I had to wear a chin strap to stop it. Now with the Swift FX, I am not using a chin strap and have very few leaks. I have trained myself to sleep with my head tilted toward my chest and that has all but stopped my mouth breathing. I just got back my sleep Dr this morning, and he was happy with my results. Image

I am a newbie to CPAP; I've only been using it for 3 weeks. However, no one should try to come between me and my machine. I love it, and these last few weeks are the first real sleep I've had in ages.

I, too, have the Swift FX nasal pillow and love it. However, the provider who fitted me insisted I needed the XS pillow - but sent me home with the other sizes too.
After about a week I had a pressure sore on my end of my nose. I had to fasten the headgear so tightly to eliminate leaks that it broke down the skin.

Thankfully I found this board and all of the wonderful people who are willing to share their experiences and wisdom. After reading the posts here, I immediately switched my pillow from the XS to the S and loosened up the headgear. Viola. Problem solved. No pressure on my nose, headgear not as tight, and no leaks.

Many thanks. I hope to be able to return the favor and help others in the future.

Hi Jim,
So glad you are being pro-active and testing out various masks. I know you also tried the LT, but if the FX is what works, GREAT!! Got my fingers crossed you have a successful night tonight without the cap or tape.....

Keep us posted!

congrats on your success thus far. I hope it continues for you. I just picked up the same nasal pillow apparatus today and I looked forward to my first successful night as well. I am also a mouth breather and the FFM just couldn't be dealt with. I also have a chin strap and I am determined to keep my mouth shut!!!!!!

Congrats on a good night. I am liking my Swift FX also. About 3 months with it upgrading from a Swift II.

I stopped taping about a year and a half ago. Been going pretty good but seem to be getting some mouth leakage again recently. Waiting to see if it is a trend or just a fluke. Dont really want to go back to taping again. No way I could use a FFM, I could not get a nasal mask to stop leaking and I know FF masks are even harder to control. May try a PAP cap or chin strap to see if that helps.

Dennis
