Heated hose and allergies/cold

Post by bigcat » Wed Jan 11, 2006 3:28 pm

Just wanted to see if the heated hose has helped anyone with allergies or cold symptoms? I currently don’t have rainout problems, but could turn up the heat more with the heated hose. I currently have my heat on 3.5 on my spirit, with hose cover and no rainout. If I increase the heat above this number I get rainout.

I read over and over how the heated hose cures rainout, just wanted to know if there are more added benefits to increasing the heat on the humidifier?

Really suffering with colds this year and allergies are just around the corner!!

bigcat,

This is one of the reasons i love the heated hose. I am able to go to bed with my nose COMPLETELY plugged and as soon as the warm moist air starts passing thru my nose my nasal passages are free and clear. I spent many pre-cpap nights with dealing with a cold by hanging my mouth open.

Sincerely,

I don't use a heated hose, but I use a polyfleece hose cover, and it works like a charm. We keep our bedroom temperature set at 61F overnight, and I have had no rainout whatsoever. Before slipping on the polyfleece, I was experiencing some rainout even in the relatively warm nights of early September.

FYI, the heater on my Invacare Polaris EX doesn't have a numerical dial, but I have it set a bit past the halfway point, or about 2 to 3 ticks higher than the original recommendation. If I don't remember to preheat it, it starts pretty cold, which I find (1) refreshing and (2) tending to keep me awake longer.

Thanks for the replies.

I also have the fleece cover (sorry I didn’t mention this) It does help, I can go to 3.5 setting out of 6. I just wanted to know if the last 2.5 increase is worth the heated hose money? Am I leaving too much on the table?

Hey Bigcat, take a look at how you are cleaning your equipment also. I used to keep a cold until my RT recommended a product called respiclean. It kills all the bacteria, mold, fungus, mildew, virus and any other little critters that can grow in a warm, wet enviroment like a humidifier. Hope this helps.

Bigcat,

In my case the heated hose allowed me to turn up the humidifier temperature so I could get more moisture without rainout.
The result was no more nights where my nose was so congested that I had to take off the mask.
It really works and has my wholehearted recommendation.

I made hose covers for our hoses and Tom's hose pulled out of his machince.

Mine is doing great that I made, but I am interested in the heated hose.

This really sounds interesting.

I am going to research the heated hose and maybe get one for tom for his birthday or something.

I have been using the heated hose for almost a year now with the humidifier set at the highest setting on the machine and using the heated hose, have no rainout, and have not had any sinus headaches, which I used to get almost every day when the weather got cold here. Not saying that the hose had anything to do with it except it allowed the high humidity setting. I would definitely recommend the hose to anyone keeping their room temperature low and desire a higher humidity setting without rainout.
