Amen to that, tschultz and Pugsy!

I'm not sure what is worse: docs and DMEs who want to keep us ignorant and passive, or the patients who prefer to be ignorant and passive about their cpap therapy and leave it up to the "professional."

OSA is truly a case where knowledge = the power to take control of your therapy and feel better.

I contacted F&P expressing my disappointment in not being able to purchase the software. This is the response I got:

Thank you for contacting Fisher & Paykel Healthcare. I'm sorry that we are unable to provide that software to you. The reason is because we are not licensed to sell any of our products to patients/consumers, but only to distributors or physicians. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

OK, well why isn't it available from any distributors or physicians? Is it the DME's choosing not to sell it?

It is my opinion that it should be illegal to provide a CPAP machine, auto or otherwise, that is not fully data capable. I would also suggest that the patients access to the data be no different than any other information, it is their property and can not be withheld from them. For these reasons the software should actually come with the machine as a mandatory accessory no different than the power adapter. Those patients that do not want to review their data do not have to, however if at any time the patient wants to review their treatment efficacy this should be easily accomplished and without additional expense or wait times.

I would have quoted your entire posting, as I totally agree with you.. Perhaps we can find a way to form a group to change the laws.

I wonder why they are not licensed to sell their own product? Seems to me that perhaps it is the DME's who are controlling our lives. My doctor might just be told a bunch of crap from the DME and the REP for F&P and believes it. I do know I have a friend who is "Almost" a doctor and she inquired about getting me the software. She could buy it, but in doing so, would have to sign a paper stating that she would NEVER give it to a patient and that if found that she did, would lose her license and would be fined 1million. Yes...that's what the local Rep for F&P told her. He said they do not want patients to change their pressure. Of course neither she nor I would put her in a position to ruin her life over a software, so needless to say, it was not purchased. I am still at a loss why there are not TWO versions of the software. One for docs and one for Patients. Someone is preventing us from our right to know.

Kelly.....

Tigers aren't "bovinely compliant"....and you're a Tiger.

They're trying to manipulate and jerk you around. Your ferocity is admirable.

Don't let up on the pressure. You want the software....and don't stop until you get it.

If you have to, call their bluff, obtain the full and complete record of your sleep test(s).... and then, fire the doctor.
