Water in humid. tank ?

If you have the humidifier set to "0" , is there a need to keep water in humidifier tank ?

You would have "passover" humidification........the air "passes over" the water and picks up SOME humidity.
I've used that method all year round since I started therapy.

@ Motor - If you don't want to use the humidification, how about detaching the humidifier from your machine?

Technically no, if the heated humidifier is set to "0" it is turned off and you wouldn't need to have any water in the chamber. But, as Wolfman stated, water in the humidifier at a setting of "0" still provides some humidification-passover humidification.

If you are going to turn off the humidifier and you don't plan to fill it with any water, then you should consider removing the humidifier from the PAP. Removing the humidifier will reduce some of the noise that the PAP makes and make the "footprint" of the PAP, on the night stand smaller. There is likely an adaptor or cover that may need to be changed or added to convert the PAP to no humidification.

If you leave the humidifier installed but you don't fill it with water, then you should be careful to keep the humidifier set to "0". Almost all CPAP humidifiers can withstand running dry (running out of water over night) but chronically running the humidifier (with the heater on - a setting other then "0") could cause issues over time.

Many people find that humidification assists in their ability to tolerate CPAP. So, keep the humidifier handy "just in case."

Yep, maybe issues over time but heat in an empty chamber can stink something awful first night. I have accidentally let mine run dry and the smell woke me up. I knew immediately what I had done. Hot plastic smell. Not good.

what's nice about the system one humidifier's is if you run out of water it senses the plate getting to hot and shut the heater off

Really? That is nice to know. I would sure like to have System one APAP but now they have the "latest" one I want it and can't afford it. Was hoping to find gently used at the auction. Now I have to wait till the "latest and quietest" ones filter down to the auction.

I thought the machine would be louder if the humidifer portion was removed ? Or, at least that's what I heard somewhere else...Now , that the temps are in high 60s, lower 70s, I find the humidification uncomfortable....but it was sure nice during those cold nights.

Hi,

System One is quieter (just like most PAPs) when the "built in humidifier" is removed. I think that there is a video or something like that on the Respironics web site (boasting about the new quiet version of System One).

I think that a humidity chamber has some level of acoustic action similar to the sounding board in a music box. I suggest that you try your unit with and without the humidifier and make your own decision.
