Hi Everyrone and Happy 2006 -
I have a Resmed S8 Vantage and the associated software - my stupid quesiton (for today) is how do I get the data from the machine to the computer?
I have a smart card, and the user manual tells how to save the data to the card - so do I need the Resmed card reader or will my normal card reader (it handles 7 different kinds of cards) work?
Also several folks have mentioned serial cables - can I just buy one of those (and if so where) and download directly from the machine to the computer?
I don't remember I felt like such a dummy about anything. If it weren't for these boards, I'm not sure where the heck I would get my information - it just doesn't seem to exist elsewhere!
as always - many thanks for any help you can offer.
Downloading data to software
There are 2 issues you need to deal with ...
1) If you want to read the datacard you need to buy ResMed's card reader. I doubt you will have one that reads the new ResMed form factor for datacards.

2) If you instead decide to buy the ResMed serial port adapter (I can't see them listed at cpap.com but they do exist), then you can use a 'null-modem' cable to connect between a serial port (using a 9-pin serial socket on a computer), or to a a USB to serial adapter). If you have to buy a USB-to-Serial adapter then you may find the cost of it plus the serial adapter on the S8 plus the null modem cable, add up to a lot more than the ResMed datacard reader.
On reflection ...
To cut the complexity and avoid a barrel of frustrations, just buy a ResMed S8 datacard reader. Trying to get the serial link working on a modern PC may prove far more frustrating and more expensinve that buying the card reader (which only costs $64.99 from cpap.com).
Cheers

PS I am sure you will be very happy with the data you can download.
PPS
I think a null-modem cable costs about $US8-9 or so from Tandy
Also the serial adaptor for the S8 cost about $US35 and a USB to serial adapter for your PC is about $US20 or so.
