Recently the 3M painter's tape hasn't been working so well. So I pulled out my papcap plus - had tried it last year but found tape more effective. Surprise, at least for the first 7 days - it's works just about the same as tape. I'm trying to 'train' myself to keep my mouth closed, not sure how it's working. Plus with the headrest, having the cap means not having to worry about cleaning the headgear as often.

Obviously the other option is combo of tape and papcap but i find that overkill.

If you're considering the pap-cap, keep in mind Bret does have a full refund policy.

PS - to your question - nope, it's not hot. But we keep temp to 62 at night - if anything it keeps me toasty warm

From my experience, all the paper tapes were not acceptable. They either did not have enough adhesive or too much. I finally learned from a nurse that cloth surgical tape is much better than paper. It's a Johnson and Johnson product and I could only find it in 1" rolls. It leaves no adhesive residue to fight with. I finally quit taping and now use a Cpapcap, which is much more robust than a flimsy chin strap, which most are. It gets me through the night without suffering extreme dry mouth. Since I have to have it so tight to keep my mouth closed, it took a while to get used to the tightness. I liked the results of taping but just didn't want to go through the rest of my life taping up at night. Good luck.

Hi Lucy,
I just received that chinstrap yesterday and it was annoying for me. (I use a Swift FX for Her nasal pillow mask) All of the head straps holding the chinstrap and mask were sliding all over the place. I have a relatively small head and face, so the straps on the side of the chinstrap did not line up well (for those who have used it, yes I saw all the adjustments) and the chinstrap kept ending up skewed to the right.

Anyway, I also ordered 30 of these Chin-Up strips http://www.chinupstrip.com/index.html, and received them yesterday too. After ripping off the above fabric chinstrap within an hour, I tried one of the Chin-Up strips and it actually worked. It kept my mouth closed, but there was just enough of an opening to cough, drink, etc. I'm pretty sure my mouth stayed closed all night because it never got dry. For the first time since I got the machine two months ago, I kept the mask on all the way until 6 am! My skin was looking fine today even though I have sensitivity to bandages too.

I had abdominal surgery a couple of years ago and had a very severe skin reaction to 3M Nexcare bandages. It took about 4 months for the redness to finally go away. So I am very hopeful that these Chin-Up strips will not cause any problems. If I start to have skin problems, I might try making something like a chin-up strip using different tape.

I am really hopeful now that I can actually stick with the CPAP somewhat comfortably.

I'm Lucy too!

Try it-It works.

After you've read on here for awhile... you'll find that we get RT's (a lot of which are "drive by's" to never be heard from again!) that think that they know everything... including stating that it's against the law to change our own pressures. Keep in mind that a lot of the RT's that post warnings on here... don't use machines themselves, and don't have the experience of the people that are posting here trying to help. They may have book knowledge, but a lot of the ones that do the "drive by" posting... don't appear to have "practial" knowledge.

Have to tell this little story. Back when I was just starting this cpap journey I taped for a while. I would go to DME to get the replacement pillow and we would talk about how things were going. I would just laugh and tell him that taping wasn't so bad and I hadn't died or choked and even with power outage I survived.

He told me that one of his staff (a woman) was on cpap. I guess she came to work one day with duct tape residue on her lips and face. We can all imagine how tough that stuff is to get off. Anyway, she took a lot of ribbing over doing something so "dangerous". But hey, even they do it, they just can't or won't advocate it...

Mouth leak with nasal continuous positive airway pressure increases nasal airway resistance
Am. J. Respir. Crit. Care Med., Vol 154, No. 1, Jul 1996, 182-186.

The last 2 authors are among the inventors of cpap.

Effect of mouth leak on effectiveness of nasal bilevel ventilatoryassistance and sleep architecture
Eur Respir J 1999; 14: 1251±1257
H. Teschler*, J. Stampa*, R. Ragette*, N. Konietzko*, M. Berthon-Jones**
ABSTRACT: Mouth leak is common during nasal ventilatory assistance, but its
effects on ventilatory support and on sleep architecture are unknown. The acute effect
of sealing the mouth on sleep architecture and transcutaneous carbon dioxide tension
(Ptc,CO2) was tested in 9 patients (7 hypercapnic) on longterm nasal bilevel ventilation
with symptomatic mouth leak.
Patients slept with nasal bilevel ventilation at their usual settings on two nights in
random order. On one night, the mouth was taped closed. Leak was measured with a
pneumotachograph.
Median leak fell from 0.35‹0.07 (mean‹SEM) L.s-1 untaped to 0.06‹0.03 L.s-1 taped.
Ptc,CO2 fell in 8/9, including all hypercapnic patients. Across all patients, the mean
Ptc,CO2 fell by 1.02‹0.28 kPa (7.7‹2.1 mmHg) with taping (p=0.007). Arousal index fell
in every patient. Mean arousal index fell from 35.0‹3.0 to 13.9‹1.2.h-1 (p<0.0001), and
rapid eye movement (REM) sleep increased from 12.9‹1.5% to 21.1‹1.8% sleep time
(p=0.0016). Slow wave sleep changed inconsistently, from a mean of 13.1‹1.6% to
19.5‹2.2% of sleep (p=0.09). Sleep latency and efficiency were unchanged. In four
healthy volunteers ventilator-induced awake hypopharyngeal pressure swing during
timed bilevel ventilation fell by 35‹5%.L-1.s-1 of voluntary mouth leak (p<0.0001).
Mouth leak reduces effective nasal bilevel ventilatory support, increases transcutaneous
carbon dioxide tension, and disrupts sleep architecture
.
My emphasis....

After I got over my shock at the idea of taping (took me some months to dare) , I taped happily for 4 years or more - had to switch to a full face mask because my beloved Headrest (a nasal pillows mask) was causing congestion that made me need to mouthbreathe.

I need a tape that is water resistant.

Depending on how much I slobber at night, I only get 1-1/2 to 4 hours of CPAP use per night. I started on this journey in December 2010. I'm using a FFM with maximum humidifier setting but get desert mouth each night. I wake up with the tape loose enough for mouth breathing. Not fun.

I've done a lot of cpaptalk reading but haven't tried all of the various tapes being used by the forum. Walgreens and CVS seem to mostly carry their own store brand of tape. So, before I start ordering tape, I thought I would ask.
