Mask leaks from outside in !!

Post by lfreese » Wed Mar 02, 2011 8:17 am

I have tried numerous FF masks over the last 16 months with the same results. Face fart leaks on every one of them! Mostly the leaks were in one place, on the right side near where the mask turned from horrizontal to vertical. What I just now realized was that the leaks occured when I inhaled, and that the leaks were from the outside in!!! I have tried Remzzs which tend to silence the leaks but result in pulling in more air @ room temp, 70 deg F+ or -. This feels really cold and uncomfortable. I have had periods where the Quattro mask would work well for several weeks at a time, and then, for no reason start the face farts again. I have tried Lansonoh, washing, shaving, you name it and I have tried it all to no avail.
I just bought a Hybrid but I am not having any success with the nipples sealing properly. At least it isn't making a lot of noise. My machine is running on bpap @ 19 with the humidifier on 3. This apnea has already led to A-flutter, a trip to the hospital and my doctor telling me that if I didn't get cpap therapy I would probably have a heart attack.( no pressure!)
Help!!!

Did you try Rooster's fix for securing the Hybrid nasal pillows with women's tights? He swears buy it and uses the Hybrid exclusively.

Or a slight modification on Rooster's idea: Use a rubber band or elastic band to hold the nose pillows in.

There's a picture and instructions on p. 2 of this thread:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=13882&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=15

and don't forget that you can also modify the chin flap if necessary.

Here's the link to all the Lab Rat Awards:

There were some other modifications to the Hybrid that worked for people.

I ended up cutting off the chin flap and using the rubber band trick to hold the nose pillows in. Although I found that for me, using a piece of narrow sewing elastic was better than a rubber band because I could fine tune the adjustment better. Worked great!

I thank you for the responses. What really puzzles me is why my masks leak from the outside in. I would think that it would be the high pressure inside the mask breaking the seal. It's as if when I inhale I create a negative pressure inside the mask, causing air to be pulled in and then the noises occur. Is this common?

Do you have the Innomed Hybrid mask or the Liberty? If it is the Innomed Hybrid, did the DME include all three sizes of nasal pillows (nipples) and all three sizes of mouth cushions in the package? (They have been known to remove all but one size. )

For me there were three keys to getting my Innomed Hybrid to work very well.

1. Selecting the appropriate sizes of nasal pillows and mouth cushions.
2. Adjust the headgear properly.
3. Use the ladies tight fix. (These are very common ladies tights made of polyester microfiber; they are not nylon pantyhose.)
