Night vision video cameras?

Post by ohammersmith » Mon Jan 31, 2011 11:17 am

I know a few people have set up cameras to film themselves sleeping.

I'm considering it so I can find the more elusive leaks with the QuattroFX. They're not bad, but if I can figure out what's going on I can try something new. I bet it's just being on my side or something similar.

Does anyone know of good cameras to use?

Buy.com has one for $52 or so, but not sure I can record video with it.

that camera would have to be hooked up to your computer/network. it is not a stand alone camera. you can buy a used one on craigslist or ebay. Sony made some with night shot mode the worked real well for total darkness.

For basic movements in my sleep i track them using a $5 web cam and free software called "dorgem"

The webcam has 4 led lights which can be adjusted (dimmed).

That one you chose looks like a bit of overkill! Do you really need the pan and tilt? There are much cheaper web cams available like
http://www.amazon.com/Round-Webcam-Micr ... 64&sr=1-71

And you can use microsoft movie maker as the recorder.

The problem with a straight webcam is that I need a computer in the room, and that ends up being more noise, more light and ugh.

That camera is just a cat 5 cable and it's hooked up.

And nope, don't need pan & tilt, but it's cheaper than other similar cameras without pan & tilt because it's on sale.

Do the webcams you're using have infrared?

I do have a Sony with night shot, but it doesn't have enough storage to run for very long... it's old memory sticks that cap out at 128M so I think I can only get like 20 minutes of video.

I haven't done it yet (video'd myself) but when I do I'll use a samsung video camera with night vision connected directly to a pc. No worries about recording time. It'll be nice if I can hook up the ASV to the pc at the same time. Then if these guys would pull finger and finish their EEG http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/865 ... rduino-eeg then I could have a whole sleep lab in my bedroom!

I'm gonna try out the bunch of cameras I have on hand tonight and see if I have something that works. I keep fighting with myself over the trade off between time and $$. If I could have something tomorrow that Just Worked (TM) I'd drop the $50... but I've convinced myself that a badly documented cheapie camera from China isn't going to Just Work (TM).

But then I gotta build something ... and that takes time.

I have an old webcam that I was already planning on ripping apart to take the infrared filter off... needed a heat sensing camera for my Makerbot project... anyway I digress.

I should just do that. Worst case is a long USB cable to keep the computer away from the bed.

As for the EEG, doesn't OpenEEG already exist? http://openeeg.sourceforge.net/doc/

That would be one of my next projects.

Turns out the front facing camera on my iPhone 4 does not appear to have an IR filter.

I got a time-lapse iPhone app, and an IR illuminator for $30. Problem is the illuminator only runs on battery power and that only lasts an hour. Need to hack something with that... but that's not so bad.

I had a 10 day leak-free streak so I thought I had it licked and kinda dropped the project. Leaked a couple nights and then back to leak free. No clue what caused it, though so I'm back thinking about this.

There are stores which rent camera equipment. You can rent the top of the line cameras for a weekend. I know because I had to return the cameras my daughter used to record her G & S production of Ruddigore last weekend.

Just got a Zeo sleep coach, and am blown away by their support of the OpenSource community: http://zeorawdata.sourceforge.net/index.html
So far, well worth the money.

People have hooked the Zeo up to Arduinos, PCs, ...

Disclaimer: Not working for Zeo in any way, shape, or form - I just happen to like the thing!
