Aaarrggghh! Error message for ResScan

Post by greensled » Mon Feb 07, 2011 10:01 pm

Image

This is the error I keep getting when I open ResScan. I am running Win7 32 bit. I have gone through and cleaned up any and all ResMed and ResScan entries and I still am getting this error. What does this error mean?? I don't know what I'm doing wrong. When I go past that error, the program can't find my SD card in my laptop's card reader either.

I can see the SD card mount as a separate drive (in my case F:), so it's not an issue of the card reader not working. I just can't seem to get ResScan to find the SD card.

Any geeks out there who can help me?

Some thoughts:

Is this a new install or a reinstall of 3.13?
If it's a reinstall, did you make sure not to allow it to re-install the drivers for the SD Card?

If did reinstall the drivers by mistake, use System Restore to go to a previous version of the system registry from before when you reinstalled the 3.13 software.

Uninstall ResScan again (if possible).
Then reinstall 3.13 without allowing it to reinstall the SD Card Drivers.

If that doesn't work there may be other possibilities.

I hope this helps.

You may have a corrupted install file. I'd download the install file again and reinstall.

I had 3.12 installed and it did that same error as well. I did uninstall 3.12 and drivers, run regedit, etc. So annoying!!

I may have messed up on the install of 3.12 by having it reinstall the drivers. I can't figure out how to get all of it off my system to do a clean install.

There is a free program called CCleaner. Get it and install it. One of the options is to remove dead and broken references in the registry. The company that makes the s/w we use for worship presentations at church recommends its use, and I have used it. Be careful using it. You can muck up your system if you are reckless, but it will help you make a backup first just in case something doesn't go right. Don't be afraid to use it, just be careful. It will go a long way in solving your problems I would guess.

Once again, is this while installing or starting Resscan after it's installed? If during install are you logged in as administrator?

After starting the program. Nothing is wrong with the install. I am the administrator on this machine. It does work on my husband's Win7 64bit machine, so I'm going to try to copy the files from his machine to mine to see if that resolves the issue.

Unfortunately, I'm not a software specialist, but here's my best guess. I'll put each idea in a separate paragraph for ease of reading.

Somewhere you have a program library file, i.e., DLL, that has been changed by some other program and that DLL is incompatible with the rest of Resscan. Do you have any out of the ordinary programs on your computer that are not on hubby's?

Maybe you have a hard drive defect where one of the Resscan files is located. Run the defrag and error checking programs from your drive properties dialog.

Another possibility, are you running tight on free space on your hard drive? Being short of space can cause some really weird problems I've found. Download and install a program called CCleaner and clean up old junk off your drive.

If nothing else, uninstall Resscan and two or three other programs you don't use much. Do the defrag and error check, and reinstall Resscan. Open Resscan immediately after installing and see if it opens. That way if some other program is changing a dll or something else maybe you can find it by running Resscan, another program, Resscan, a 3rd program, Resscan, and so on.

If all the above fails, get the program Hijack This! and get a snapshot of your system and post it on the Hijack forum. Maybe someone there can spot the problem source.

I just did a search on Google for that error message. All discussions lead to corrupt files and/or corrupt entries in the registry. One user had this error running Resscan 3.5, so it's not version related.

Considering the fact that everyone else runs 12 and 13 with no problem is a clear indication there is something unique about your computer that is causing the problem. I don't like to be negative but even if Resmed was providing support to users I don't think they would be able to help.

And with that, I'm out of ideas and suggestions. Hope this helps. Good luck.

EDIT: Sorry, I just noticed you already have run CCleaner. What about defrag and error check?

Second EDIT: One more idea, the nuclear option - reformat and reload. Of course, back up all your data first. This is where M$ really truly screwed up Windows design, having all user data on the same drive with the program files, but that is gist for another rant altogether. But it does make the nuclear option very undesirable and a last choice.

Oh, I should have added that copying files from hubby's machine is most likely going to be an exercise in futility. That's because the files may be scattered hither and yon, assuming you can even determine which ones are related to Resscan. Files on the hard drive is only one part of the complex program installation condition. There are boo coo entries in the registry related to Resscan, many, if not most, hidden in entries with a who-knows-what-they-mean ID numbers that on the surface provide no clue whatever what program they are associated with. You mention hubby has a Win 7 machine which implies yours is different. The registries and files locations are most likely altogether different between the two machines.

Now, if you know all the above and know how to manage all those intricacies of transferring a program from one PC to another, you most likely would not be here asking for help with that error message. Or do I seriously underestimate you? If so, I apologize.

Since you are using the card reader in your computer, you do not need any of the 3 drivers that are available for install Each is intended for use with a specific Resmed device.

Copying the files from the other computer is probably not going to help.

Did you go into control panel->Add/Remove programs to uninstall the ResMed drivers? If so, did you re-boot afterwards?

Sometimes, when things get out of whack, doing another install (including all 3 drivers this time), will fix broken file references so that a subsequent uninstall can clean everything out. That would be the first thing I would try. After reinstalling, don't try to run it. Simply go to control panel->Add/Remove and remove both Resmed entries (drivers and app). Then reboot the computer. Next, run CC (both the cleaner and the registry scan), removing any resmed references found. Then, reboot again. Finally, re-install ResScan, but do not install any drivers this time.

If that doesn't work, any of idamtnboy's suggestions may help. If not, then finding a local person to give it a go or reinstalling Windows may be the only to go.

Good luck and keep us posted.

BTW - the reason this issue is not specific to any version of ResScan is because the 3 drivers which are included with ResScan were developed by the companies that manufactured those devices. 2 of them are from 2009 and 1 is from 2008. Since those devices didn't change, the drivers didn't either. Which is probably part of the reason that the ResScan installer cautions against re-installing them.

I installed 3.11 and everything resolved itself. I don't know what the issue was exactly, but 3.11 is now on my laptop and I can finally see my data!! Thanks to all who tried to help me. I really appreciate it! Now I just need to learn how to read my graphs properly.

That's great! I've noticed very few differences between 3.11, 3.12, and 3.13, and nothing of any real consequence.
