My data Card Is WORN OUT!

Post by Komodo » Wed Jan 12, 2011 9:17 am

After only 9 months, the data card of my S8 Vpap is WORN OUT!

Every other day I (have to) check my data. Insert the card into the machine, then into the card reader. There are now so many "wear marks" on the card it no longer works in the machine. When I insert it, all I get is "WELCOME" on the led screen, and it doesn't download the data.

I'd buy another card, but Resmed won't let anyone sell them anymore!!!
Neither will they sell the USB adapter.

Does anyone know how I can retrieve my data

Is there an aftermarket card, or USB adapter that will work?

Right now I'm using an OLD card from my first S8 2, but that one's pretty worn out as well and I don't know how much longer it will last.

If you're unable to get a card maybe this will work. I don't know for your country medical coverage/system, but here if my data card wore out I would have the DME replace it. I do not visit a sleep therapist to have my card read, but it's not like I couldn't if I wanted to. So, if I had a card that didn't work I'd visit the sleep therapist and let them read the card and find out it's worn out. They should replace it as a matter of course in the interest of monitoring your therapy.

My sleep technician said that generic card readers available at stores such as Fry's should work. Google "Smart Card Reader ACR38 (P/N: ACR38U-PNC-R)" and see if you can find/try one. Good luck. It's outrageous that patients are not allowed by ResMed to read/graph/download/interpret their own sleep data which should make patients only more educated when discussing sleep issues with doctors.

I TOTALLY agree we should be encouraged to participate and understand. If I hadn't learned how to use and read my own data I would still be having more events as the DME sleep therapist when I first began thought 5.0 was just fine. I took ownership and tweeked this and that with a year after year average under 1.5, many times nearly zero.

Someone else PM'd me, with some very interesting information about their own machine & card problem.

I would like to thank that person as well.

Because of their PM, I will be contacting my DME.

Since it was a Private Message, I won't disclose what was in it, but I do think that person should post that info here. It was a great help to me, and I'm sure others could benefit from it as well.

Resmed isn't concerned, but the US FDA is, and the FDA sets the regulations.

Cheers,

Bill

Ummm... I used a Sandisk SD card instead of the ResMed for a while - worked fine. Any SD card should as long as that's all you use it for. Hubby bought a ordinary ol' card reader which also works just fine.

I thought the machines hold a week's worth of data on them at a time.. but I could be wrong.

Cheers,
xena

Our 'friends' from ResMed monitor this site, thus the need for PM

Take a SOFT eraser, not the gritty kind, and "erase" the marks off the gold "spot" on your S8 data card. Then clean w/a good rub of alcohol. My 'puter guru put me on to that one and it works great.

Well... my neurologist, cardio, endo and PCP are ECSTATIC that I have access to my CPAP data, and if I hadn't printed out a report, my neuro wouldn't have had a clue how my first month of therapy had gone - technically-speaking.

So.... bring on the heavies - if the doctors who CARE about my health, encourage my efforts to take charge of my own health, then damn those who want to treat us like mushrooms by feeding us BS and keeping us in the dark!

Cheers,
xena

Thank you, BeachGirl, that was most generous of you! I was started on a Resmed S8 Elite in 2006, purchased a S8 AutoSet Vantage out of pocket in 2007, then was switched to a Resmed VPAP Auto in 2008. I started w/AutoScan 5.7 and am now working w/ResScan 3.10. I wasn't given a data card w/the Vantage or the VPAP Auto. Now w/the advent of the S9s I guard my card reader cable and data card zealously!! I LOVE my S8s and am almost glad Resmed hasn't come out w/an S9 VPAP Auto yet.

I was a basket case when my S8 data card started muffing up and not working. God bless my 'puter guru who told me about the soft eraser and alcohol!!!! This card has been thru a bit more than 4 years of almost daily use! knock, Knock, KNOCK.
