Power failure last night

Post by tattooyu » Thu Jan 06, 2011 11:27 am

Hi everyone! I'm still here, just a busy daddy.

Last night our power went out at 4 am (I get up at 5:45-6:00 am). Needless to say, I didn't enjoy waking up by being partially suffocated. Today, I feel like I did before I started CPAP... yeah it's one of those days.

I've PM'd Bill Bolton for some battery backup tips and will be doing a lot of searching on the board. If anyone has links to good threads about that, I'd appreciate if you post them here. Ultimately, I would like a system that switches automatically to DC in the event of a power failure and then back to AC when it comes back on. It's be great if I could use it camping as well.

Lots of carbs for me today. <sigh>

And now for something completely different: Jonah Claus.

Jonah Claus is SO cute! He seems to be really growing quickly! (I guess most babies do!)

JohnBFishser has an excellent post on this subject, with complete, detailed information on how to make a battery backup, and it will automatically convert to using it when the power goes off. Here's the link: viewtopic.php?t=49115

You can also check out Jazzer4's recent post entitled Resmed This is Ridiculous (should still be on the first page of posts). Within that post, there is also another link to a listing of different camping/power outage type posts.

If you're considering buying a new machine, the DeVilbiss IntelliPAP machines do a great job of automatically switching to battery power and back. I have mine set up that way with a 16ah battery. The heat turns off on the humidifier when it switches to DC and turns back on automatically when it switches back to AC power. I have a "Battery Tender Plus" keeping my battery topped off while the battery is also connected to my CPAP. It works seamlessly, beautifully even. Hook it up and forget about it. I use mine for camping too. Just keep in mind the humidifier is only passover when on battery power.

I just use a UPS that one normally uses on a computer system.

Have not yet had a power outage that has outlasted its battery.

And the switch to the UPS is instantaneous, so is back to A/C power when it comes back on.

My UPS has an alert that beeps periodically to let you know that you are on battery power.
I had to disable that beep, otherwise it will wake you.

Have slept thorugh MANY power outages & never knew it - except for that flashing 12:00 on my clock.

I loved that baby Jonah picture!! Just made me smile to look at it. He is so cute!

I had my first power outage the other night. I woke to my machine beeping at me. I didn't know it would do that when the power went out. Nice to know. Just as I was trying to wake up and figure out what to do, the power came back on and I went right back to sleep.

We have power outages so rarely I don't know if it's worth the money. However, we are in earthquake territory, so I don't know. I should think about this more when I have a clear head, not exhausted and can breathe with no heaviness in my chest. Oh yeah, I'm dizzy, too. Hypoxia anyone?

Wow, I can't believe how incredibly horrible I feel today. Palpitations, headache, neck/shoulder/chest soreness. I think all the soreness is from the oxygen deprivation and the few moments my body was working hard to breathe while the power was off.

I may have to go home early. Whew.

Kenny, get a power outage alarm. I don't wake up when the power goes out and rely on this gadget to wake me before I suffer. It's like $15; our host carries it. Plug it into the same electical receptacle where your machine plugs in. It flashes 3 LEDs and make beeps.

Jonah's a real cutie!

I guess I know now what a power outage would feel like.
The other night, I got up to find the tape for my sweetie, hosed back up and FORGOT to turn the blower back on--for six hours.
Auto on--maybe a good idea?
