NOISE OF MACHINE

Post by ng.p@hotmail.com » Wed Jan 05, 2011 8:39 am

NEED EXPERIENCE INFO:

I HAVE USED A REMstar Plus Domestic Model # 1005960 SINCE JULY OF 2006. IT DOES NOT HAVE A CHIP TO RECORD SLEEP ACTIVITY.

I PURCHASED A ResMed Autostart Vantage with humidifier and chip, went to the Dr on Monday so he could verify and legally update the RX set number level (I am only a level 7) and went to Apria yesterday to have the unit "programmed". The person who sold me the unit was a private party who could not adjust to using the c-pap machine, she would not say "WHY" but the mask was what she was attempting to use. She revealed she used the equipment only briefly and it DOES appear to be brand new. It is probably 2 years old as she didn't get around to advertising or selling it right away. I did not try to use the unit until after I saw the doctor and had it set by APRIA because I had no idea what her sleep RX was and did not know how to use the machine. I used it Monday night and Tuesday night.

PROBLEM!! This machine makes so much noise compared to what I am used to. Additionally, IF I lay on my side and my ear touches the pillow, I feel like I am in a jet engine test tunnel---there is a loud echo and wind noise. I tried this for 2 nights and had to resort to taking a sleeping pill to get to sleep over the noise and echo. THIS IS COUNTER PRODUCTIVE as my goal is to NOT USE SLEEPING PILLS. Ear plugs would not work as putting a stopper in the ear channel accentuates the noise.

DOES ANYONE HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH THIS MODEL? I thought having the ramp adjusted, etc. could help. I would be most greatful to hear any input if someone knows or had experience with this unit. THANK YOU.

I don't have any experience with ResMed equipment, but I know some makes/models are noisier than others. Here's a few general things you can try.

Put the machine on a mousepad. That way, the noise won't resonate thru the table.
Place the machine lower, below the surface of the bed. The mattress will then absorb some of the noise before it gets to your ears.
Sometimes machine noise is transmitted thru the hose. If you can, locate the hose so it doesn't touch you or the surface of the bed. Maybe route it up over the headboard. Also, sometimes suspending it in a "sling" helps (I use an old sock...)
Making or buying a hosecover often helps damp the noise.

Best of luck!

What else did you change besides the machine? This sounds more like a mask or hose leak than machine noise.

I agree it sounds like a mask problem.

Thanks all for the input. I did not change the mask (I use ResMed Swift LT for Her Nasal Pillows mask & headgear) When I went to Apria yesterday, the mask, hoses, all checked out fine. Additionally, when I use the same mask and hoses on my old unit--all is well. Soft sound of machine, no wind noise, no echoing. There is definitely a huge difference between the noise the two different units are producing.

Although it would be an easy solution to the noise increase--that equipment is not the cause.

Appreciate your comments, will advise if or when I find some answers.

DOES ANYONE OUT THERE HAVE A RESMED TECHNICAL SUPPORT PHONE NUMBER?

I'll try again.

It sounds very much like machine noise is resonating thru your perfectly fine hose. It's a matter of the frequency and amplitude of the noise. Trying some of the things I suggested could help damp it. Even getting a longer or shorter hose could also make a difference.

Maybe that is why the original owner did not use it. Could have been defective from the start and she didn't know it, as she didn't have anything to compare it to, as you have.

My machine is quieter with the humidifier installed even if it is off and empty. I guess it acts as a muffler or something.
