humidifier and fluid in ear canal

Post by beachbum » Tue Jan 04, 2011 8:28 am

Could the water from my humidifier be causing fluid to build up around my inner ears?

inner ears? NO. There's no physical opening between the inner ear canals and the middle ear in a normal ear.

Middle ears? Maybe, maybe not. The Eustachian tubes run from the middle ear to the pharynx and its job is to equalize the air pressure on each side of the ear drum. Because the pharynx area is part of the upper airway and sinus system, it's possible that pressure from a CPAP could affect the air pressure in the middle ear via the Eustachian tube. Do you have problems "popping" your middle ear to get the pressure in the middle ear (on the inside of the ear drum) and the pressure in the outer ear (outside the eardrum) equalized? Are you currently dealing with a head cold with congestion?

If so, then experimenting with the humidity to see if it helps make the middle ear feel better is well worth a try. Be sure to try setting the humidifier LOWER as well as HIGHER.
