PR Ser. One APAP A-Flex or Intellipap Auto for Backup/Travel

Post by dmiraclejr » Fri Dec 31, 2010 9:39 pm

Hello everyone this is my first post. I really appreciate all the great info I have gotten from this board these past 6 weeks. Like many have said already, I got much more from the people on this board than any doctor/dme/rt. Thanks again.

My question is: which of the above APAP machines would you recommend for a backup to a Resmed S9 Autoset and for travel. I will say that money is only a very small consideration when it comes to my health so the extra $190 the RP S1 costs is only of minor concern. Of course if the two are equal or the Intellipap is better than why spend the extra money? So here is what I believe to be true about the two in a pro vs. con analysis.

PR S1 with A-flex ($655 with humidifier)

Pros:
May have better apnea detection
Runs directly off of 12 volt (unlike Resmed S9)

Cons:
Costs $190 more
Has power brick
Only 2 year warranty
Possible shallow breather problems with "puffs" of air (don't think I am a shallow breather)

Intellipap auto with smart-flex ($465 with humidifier)

Pros:
$190 cheaper
No power brick
3 year warranty
Runs directly off of 12 volt (unlike Resmed S9)
Possible better data views with no extra software needed (internet codes)

Cons:
May have a little less accurate apnea detection

So what do you all think??

Thanks again for everything.

Between those two, I'd go with the Philips Respironics System One machine.
ResMed S9 VPAP Auto (ASV)
Humidifier: Integrated + Climate Control hose
Mask: Aeiomed Headrest (deconstructed, with homemade straps
3M painters tape over mouth

I recently switched from a Repsironics machine to the Intellipap and really love it. I did a TON of research and am self-pay. Spoke to a couple folks here who used both the ResMed S9 and Intellipap and eventually switched to the Intellipap for their primary machine. I don't think you can go wrong with either the PR S1 or the Intellipap, though. My Respironics machine served me well and was a tank.

Have you considered S8 autoset II?
Without humidifier, very small footprint, older version of S9 but lots of us use it as our primary unit.

Thanks for the replies so far. Hopefully they will keep coming. I did not consider the s 8 auto set II because of the price difference. I have a flex spending account burning a hole in my pocket and I am ready to have the security of a backup apap.

another reason to not consider the S8 is that you will have a hard time finding the card reader in order to get any data off the machine through the software.
