Hi Im real new so please dont mind my ignorance. I just went for my sleep study-but havent yet met with the doctor yet.
After two hours at the sleep center the tech came in, I thought to kick me out because I couldn't get to sleep. Actually she said i was asleep right away and had enough info to determine that i just need a nasal mask (that I dont breath out of my mouth at all) and thats great since that mask is less intrusive . At the end of the study (titration) she said I preformed great with the nasal mask. I'm surprised since I usually get so dry in my mouth that i have to wake up several times a night to drink water. If I only breath through my nose as she said would my mouth and throat dry? Could the Advil PMs that i hardly take but did for the study have screwed up my usual behavior she said no. Any opinions?

Re: Just diagnosed to need a Nasal mask-but i'm not sure
Welcome, jerseyLen! Chances are good that you usually breathe through your mouth because you're gasping for breath, and that's why you wake up with a dry mouth. But once the mask was put on you stopped gasping and breathed through your nose. That's one of the benefits of effective cpap therapy! A couple of warnings, however: just because you did well with the nasal mask during your study doesn't mean that a nasal mask will be the best one for you long term. The one you used that night is a good place to start, but many of us have to try several masks before we find the best one. Please do your research before you purchase your equipment. At MINIMUM you need a fully data-capable machine with a humidifier. Having an auto machine increases your chances of getting optimal therapy. Read, read, read all you can here, and ask us anything. We're here to help!

The theory is that we mouth breathe because we are not getting enough air. When you have adequate pressure you don't need to mouth breathe and can keep your mouth closed to use a nasal mask.
