Any APAP machines with battery back-up?

Post by bryansong » Tue Dec 07, 2010 9:12 am

I, myself have my own battery pack beside the bed for when the power outage occurs in the night but I am inquiring for a friend who doesn't. He probably is due a new APAP or CPAP and I was wondering if the manufacturers are making machines with back up.

I did a brief search on this topic but I didn't really see an answer, could any of you tell me?

Quite a few years ago, I bought the Resprionics battery that sits beside the table that my machine is on. I can set it up quickly if the power goes off in the night. If there have been power outages during the day, I will often just connect the battery when I go to bed so that I don't have to get up and do it in the night. I can get 3 nights at a 90% of 12 cm with a full charge - no heated humidity.

I have used this battery with my M Series and now with my System One. I try to remember to top up the charge about once a month.

Tell him to get a Respironics machine, which is a 12v system and set up a converter with a battery for full time use. That is what I have and never worry about the power going out, as I am always on 12v. When I get a PR1, it will be set up the same way.

I don't know of any APAPs that have a backup battery built in but I can recommend an APAP that works great with a battery backup, automatically and seamlessly switching to it when the power goes out.

I own a DeVilbiss IntelliPAP AutoAdjust. It has a "DC In" power plug that is separate from the regular 120v AC house power. I have a battery and the AC power hooked up at the same time. It runs from the AC power when available and when I unplug it from the wall it seamlessly switches to using the DC battery power, automatically turning off the heated humidifier. I couldn't ask for a better/smoother setup*.

My setup is as follows:
  • DeVilbiss IntelliPAP AutoAdjust
  • 16ah 12volt Deep Cycle AGM type battery (lasts at least 2 nights on a full charge with a 90% pressure of about 11.5cm. I calculate that I can get 3 nights but have never tried it.)
  • Custom cable to connect APAP to battery (center is positive on connector which I bought from Radio Shack)
  • Battery Tender Plus (I have this hooked up to keep the battery topped off. It works great and is safe to charge with the AGM type battery)
* Disclaimer: some people might want the heated humidifier to work when on battery power. I would rather it not since that would take a lot more battery power than I'm willing to give it.

ANY machine that has a 12VDC input should do just fine on a backup battery. As it turns out, I have a rechargable "Jump Start type" battery for my telescope. And the 'scope power cable fits the CPAP! I have test-driven it, and it works great. Dunno how long I'd get per charge, but my calculations indicate about 11 hrs.

I too use a jump start battery unit but I had to get an adapter from Radio Shack. I think the polarity of the center conductor was ground and the outer was 12V (my machine)

Aeiomed Everest. Battery snaps on bottom to make one unit, or detaches if you prefer. Doug

Problem with this one is that they aren't making it any more

I don't know about the 3 but the 2 wasn't an APAP and as has been pointed out - not being made anymore
