Machine seems to have turned itself off - is this possible?

Post by snoozysue » Sun Dec 05, 2010 1:38 pm

I have a PR Auto with A Flex and I am positive that in the last 3 months it has turned itself off twice and there has not been any interruption to power.
The first time was after I had been at the hospital with a very sick son ( 3 emergency admissions in 3 days) and I had my first daytime nap. I saw my provider and they just put it down to me being a bit "hysterical" through lack of sleep - I must have turned it off - which could have been possible as I was very tired.
BUT last night was just a normal night and again I woke and found it off. Once again no power problems as everything else in the house is still on, usually it's easy to tell because the digital clock is blinking.
As anyone else ever had this problem or am I really losing my mind!

My machine comes on automatically once I put the mask on and start breathing. Does yours have this feature? That way if the power flickers off or you turn it off somehow yourself, it will come back on automatically.

Thanks for the suggestion Jaylee but that's not the problem as that feature is turned off.
I am beginning to think maybe I "did it" myself or the machine has somehow become possessed!

Unless your machine's in a drawer, or very far from you, why is it so hard to believe that your hand may have flailed out when asleep (turning, or anything) and accidentally hit the button?

I suppose if it's only happened to me then it must be me.
I am paranoid about getting too close to it when I am asleep as the one and only time I have slept away from home I sent it flying off a bedside table (full of water) as I tried to turn off the alarm.

I have had people say this many times. Most the time they say the machine isn't blowing and they think this because they have become used to the pressure. This is discussed elsewhere in this forum and others.

HOWEVER: your machine also probably has an auto off feature that can be enabled or disabled. It is supposed to turn the machine off if you take the mask off and leave it off. If you get enough of a leak for it to think the mask is off your face, it may turn itself off. Disable this feature and see if it helps.

Thanks for your suggestion and information RDawkinsPhDMPH. It couldn't be the auto turn on feature because I used to have that when I first started and then I got it turned off.
I looked at the EncoreViewer data for last night and its shows a sudden stop and then a restart 2 hours later when I woke, realised it was off and turned it back on.

My husbands machine shuts off frequently . His is due to leaks. Mine shut off once but mine is an S9.

I've woken up with my machine off.

I know I do get up in the night go to the bathroom and have no recollection having done it. I assume that I turn the machine off when I get up and then probably forgot to turn the machine on again when I go back to bed.

I believe the need to use the bathroom and the fact I can forget that I did, are indications that CPAP wasn't effective that night.

It's a good idea to have Auto On enabled just in case it is accidentally shut off. My husband's machine turns itself on automatically at bedtime as soon as his mask is adjusted and he takes 1-2 good breaths.

I disabled the auto on feature on Hubbys machine and it still shuts its self off. I think I will turn it back on because it still works it is just slower to switch on or off.

I have had this exact same thing happen with my System One. The first two times it happened were in the middle of the night and I only noted them much later when I checked my data using Encore Viewer. I use the auto-on feature.

Later, the "turn-offs" became more frequent to the point where the machine simply cycled on and off.

I returned my System 1 to cpap.com (that's where I bought it) and it was replaced under warrantee.

It seems that this may be a common problem with the PR System 1. I recommend that you take your machine back to the DME as soon as possible. Take a print out of your Encore Viewer Report to substantiate your claim.

It also might be a good idea to ensure that you at least have a back-up machine to use because it appears that your System 1 is about to fail!

Good luck and let us know what results!
I'm workin' on it.

Hope this doesn't confuse the issue but on the M Series there's a Split Night Setting which needs to be set to Off. I'm wondering if the PR has that setting and if so is it possible it's set to On which might then turn itself off sometime during the night?

I don't think the machine is defective. I think it is just that it shuts off with leaks.
