Soaps for cleaning the masks
Soaps for cleaning the masks
Hi, I live and work in Japan and would like to know the best soaps to clean my masks with. If I could get the full name of the soaps and if possible the site that would help so much. I hear all diffrent things. I am limited to what I can get in Japan. Thanks for your time . I am only a new member but like the form. Jimmy

I love Dr. Bronner's pure castile soaps... I have the unscented and also the lavender scented. I did a quick Google to see if they are available in Japan, and they are! http://en.kenko.com/shop/en-us/list/br/M10034
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.
Re: Soaps for cleaning the masks
I too found these soaps excellent -- make sure you creat a good foam and rub the foam on the mask. Excellent also for cleaning your face before you go to bed -- foam necessary here too.

Re: Soaps for cleaning the masks
I clean my mask daily with a cpap mask spray cleaner and a paper towel. I'm not sure of the brand, but I order them off of Amazon. But they're expensive. I also have cpap wipes (also from Amazon), but they're also expensive and I've decided to give baby wipes a try once I run out of the cpap wipes.
Once every two weeks, I give my mask a good soaking and scrubbing with a toothbrush -- I use Dawn Direct Foam for this. It cuts through any facial grease build up very nicely. I also use this to clean my filters from my vent & oxygen concentrator.

Unscented dish soap.

I think this is sound advice for most people. In my case, the fragrance from Dawn Direct Foam (blue bottle) leaves my mask with a fresh, clean scent that I really like. I'm always excited on these cleaning days because I know my mask will be clean and fresh that evening!BlackSpinner wrote:Unscented dish soap.
But I can see where the majority of people would be better off using an unscented soap.

Yes if you have no issues with scents then use something that gives you calming pleasure. Sometimes I use my favourite handmade "Aussie" soap with tee tree oil and eucalyptus, those are about the only scents that don't trigger reactions with me.

Re: Soaps for cleaning the masks
I was warned against Dawn because it breaks down the silicone more quickly than other dish soaps. I use standard Target brand liquid hand soap.

Re: Soaps for cleaning the masks
1 part white (distilled) vinegar to 10 parts tap water is what I use for cleaning my nasal pillows every day as well as the silicone part of the Swift FX frame. For the cloth back strap, I use a few drops of whatever dish washing detergent we have on hand.
I make up the 1:10 vinegar/water mix in an old 1 gallon distilled water jug so that I don't have to measure the vinegar every single morning.

Re: Soaps for cleaning the masks
I use an inexpensive 'generic' dish soap (Sunsations one of many brands here here - I use the red color, but I am sure there are similar products in Japan). You can use Dawn occasionally, but it is too aggressive for routine use and will damage the silicone in time. Also, avoid dish soaps based on citrus cleaners (have had bad luck with those) and 'antibacterial' dish soaps.

Re: Soaps for cleaning the masks
I used to use Lever Bros soap but it causes the mask to turn yellow. Since I discovered that I used a plainbar Ivory soap. I wonder if anyone has tried Pamper "sensitive and unscented" baby wipes. I just tried one on my mirage activa mask and I will let you know how it goes.
Next question, what do you use to clean the tubing? I think the tubing is more resillient and you can use stronger soaps on them.

I like to switch around--baby wipes most of the time and baby shampoo when I get ambitious.
Unscented Dawn if it gets too grungy.

I use whatever dish soap is on sale. My mask is 3 1/2 yrs old. There is some slight discoloration of the silicone but that's no problem because I sleep with the lights off. 8o)

Re: Soaps for cleaning the masks
You can see a wide variety of soaps/cleaners will do. I always recommend people use whatever they normally use to clean their face. Esp. for those who are sensitive to either soaps or fragrances. Why reinvent the wheel?jimmyc wrote:Hi, I live and work in Japan and would like to know the best soaps to clean my masks with. I tend to think it is the soaps (or the cleaning) that shorten the life of the mask seal. So be sure you have a spare seal before you experiment.
