I'm on a boat!

Post by CaptainJack » Sat Oct 30, 2010 5:27 pm

Hello I like to travel around the gulf of mexico in my boat but I was given a cpap machine and they tell me I have to use it every night not just when I am in port. I have a battery on my boat that I can use to power the cpap machine but if I run it all night I am afraid I will run my battery down before too long. Does anyone know of like a solar powered cpap machine?

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Buy a couple of these portable solar chargers......hook them up to a 35-AH deep cycle scooter battery....and a full charge will run the blower for a couple of nights (without humidifier heat).

http://www.amazon.com/Brunton-Watt-Fold ... 537&sr=8-2

What you need to do is easily done......it just requires a few dollars....like about $700.....

You need a battery bank for CPAP that is separate from your crank battery. This way you never jeapordize your ability to crank the motor, if that is what you are worried about.

A boat your size should have 2 batteries anyway. I'm very surprised it doesn't. Add another and a battery switch. For a small investment you can run all your electronics at night on one and in the morning switch to the other one to get started.

My wife and I took our boat to Alaska this summer. The above posts have discussed the need for a dedicated starting battery. I was not able to used the heating function on my humidifier for two reasons; 1) It draws too much power, 2) Condensation (rainout) in the hose due to the cabin temperature and the 50F water temperature. The second battery is called the "house battery". I highly recommend the "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual", by Nigel Calder. It is easy to understand and easy to read. The author will explain how battery banks are wired, determining size of components, and electric codes and marine electrical practices. What you are wanting to do is quite doable.

I do not believe a solar charged cpap battery is the best solution.

I would recommend you find and buy a copy of this book;
Managing 12 volts by Harold Barre ISBN 0-9647386-2-7
$19.95 buy it at Camping World or Amazon, you can also get it at West Marine.

I don't know what type of machine you have but before I put my extra battery's in the RV I could go for 3 days with out having to run the genarator to charge the battery's in the RV, with my Cpap.

Hello: Captain Jack

What brand, model machine are you trying to run on your boat? By posting your equipment in your forum profile may help member's to better help you.Different machines may require different power sources.

I run my CPAP, with humidifier, every night on 12v battery power, which is recharged every day by solar panels. It works great and I have been doing this for over a year. It is very easy and advisable to install a 2nd battery bank in a boat and have it dedicated to just the CPAP system, or to all your electronics, with an inverter.

You can charge both batteries from the engine's alternator at the same time while keeping the starting battery electrically separate from the house battery using a "dual battery isolator". Dual battery isolators are frequently used on RVs to keep the two battery systems isolated while still being able to charge both batteries from the engine alternator.

I am on a boat as well.. I've plenty of power but my HDM Z1 cuts out after being plugged in for a minute. I was told it cannot handle the Marine deep cycle batteries. What can I do? Can I runa converter from DC to Ac and then plug it in with the AC?

With the limited info you have provided I am going to suggest you make sure the battery you are using is fully charged AND the DC power cord you are using is the correct one and sufficient size (gauge wire) to carry the current to sustain your cpap at whatever pressure you are using it at.
