Will i really get use to this?
Re: Will i really get use to this?
do you really have an escape machine?
they call it escape because if you get one you should run away run away! Its not therapy data capable..
so your chances getting used to IT have been sorely curtailed..
take that machine back and get a therapy data capable machine, not one which has COMPLIANCE DATA only...
it wont matter if you complied at first, and it ends up in the closet..
who gave you that machine anyway? they dont care about your therapy, that is for sure!
YOu have had it less than thirty days, find out if you can take it back and get a better one..

Copernicous..........
FIRST THING: CHECK THE EXACT MODEL OF YOUR MACHINE. They pawn off machines that are not data capable..........and if you are ever going to conquer this state and take control of your health, you need a data capable machine........a machine that will tell you more than just hours and the time.
Tell us exactly what ResMed model you have, and we're all glad to help

Re: Will i really get use to this?
It is a S8 series II, it does have a chip with it. my doctor prescribed the Cpap one day before she travelled and she is gone for ten days. i have to take my machine and chip to her when she gets back.
info on the net is very conflicting, and other doctors i have spoken to dont believe in cpap therapy and have advised surgery. Hence my trying to find some answers here

Re: Will i really get use to this?
I'll chime in here and add that it took me a week too, before I really felt confident that this therapy was working and wasn't just a placebo effect.
Compliance is key - I am still feeling improvement after 3 months and will now do whatever I can to use the machine every night. Lots more energy and mental focus than I ever had before.
When I went for my titration, they tried a series of masks, which were terrible for me - I knew I would slog through it, but wasn't looking forward to using them. When I got the machine from my DME, though, they supplied me with nasal pillows. I realize they aren't for everybody, but I found the pillows to be a fantastic improvement over the mask - so my at-home experience has been far better than my titration experience.
Keep trying!

Hi Copernicus
I know it's hard to believe right now, but soon you'll be dishing out advise to others. There is a learning curve with c-pap and how much you learn depends most often on how much you read here.
I just maked my one year aniversary on C-pap but I sure can remember what it was like when I first started.
It's hard to believe you can get used to sleeping with all that crap, but you can. If I did, you can. And everyone here is or are getting used to it.
My daddy always said "you can get used to hangin' if you hang long enough". It's true. It won't happen tomorrow, but it will happen.
And, just wait till your getting good sleep again.
It really is like getting your old life back.
It's huge, and wonderful!!!
Nothin' like it............C-pap ROCKS!!! (iF YOU REALLY NEED IT)
P.S. I see your on line, .......reading I hope.

Re: Will i really get use to this?
Does it have the words "Autoset"???? There are S8 Escapes (the one you DO NOT want), S8 Elites, and S8 AutoSets.................. I would not use the machine if it's not a machine you want to own--one that is fully data capable. You insurance pays the same regardless of which machine you get....so advocate for yourself right now, before you own crap for cpap.
On surgery...........I have seen conflicting results. My physician, who I trust, talked about success rates in the neighborhood of 50%--but I've never researched the rate myself. Sometimes they just cannot fix what God gave you....... My sibling had the surgery. It was extremely nasty, and he remains on cpap--a lower pressure, but on cpap none the less. There are many within this group who have had the surgery or contemplated it and give you the information you seek. There are also other alternatives to cpap--dental appliances, also with varying results and at an expense similar to cpap.

Re: Will i really get use to this?
Yeah, 2 or 3 weeks seems to be the turning point for most.
My first night I was awake fiddling with the mask and straps for most of the night. The second night, I dreamed. For the first time in many years. I knew then I had to make it work. After three weeks, I was sleeping long and well (despite still fighting mask leaks). As others have said, I wouldn't dream of sleeping without it now (pun intended...) It's my cocoon of solitude.
Keep at it.

Re: Will i really get use to this?
yes autoset spirit II. have not bought it. i guess i will be advised on what to buy after the doctor reads the data on this one. the one i have one is a on rental from the provider, and insurance in lebanon does not cover any of this anyway, so am going to end up paying for it myself
Re: Will i really get use to this?
I had a very rough time at first, bad machine, Unattentive doc, hated the stuff on my face, hated the thought of having to use it forever. But with bad family history and a scarry sleep study i had no choice, So after 3 months of CPAP I can say I feel really good . I look forward to sleeping with it because I feel so much better, and I never thought I would say that! I use my pap all night , every night. Just give it time and get help when you need it, people here are great.

Re: Will i really get use to this?
Hi Copernicus,
If you truly believe that your life or the life of someone else is at stake and are willing to make a commitment to yourself and those you love, I believe you will be 100% successful!
I am just starting on CPAP myself - tonight will be night #3. I am committed to doing whatever it takes and understand that I may experience bumps in the road (wait! I am experiencing bumps in the road!).
The fine people on this forum have so much to offer. So much compassion, conviction, and motivation exists on this forum. Take advantage of the knowledge that surrounds you. Ask questions and keep coming back! There is no problem that cannot be overcome with respect to CPAP except giving up. (I gave up back in 2002, 2004, and 2005 due to lack of knowledge, motivation, and support - thank goodness I did not become hypertensive or worse!)
I look forward to sharing experiences with you as we both navigate this new chapter in life. To a new, healthier, and better tomorrow. Hugs, Laurie

two of then were ENTs , third was a general practitioner
Re: Will i really get use to this?
Once you get a data capable machine and the right mask adjusted properly you'll be on your way. It takes education, determination and patience. Read everything you can here and ask questions. It's hard to believe but my husband calls his mask "his girlfriend" now and I don't even mind! Keep us posted.

Re: Will i really get use to this?
The main thing is to relax about the whole thing and get in the correct mind set to adjust to sleeping with the therapy. The education and support on this site really helps too. Many of us find the mask soothing and after a while you may find yourself putting the mask on to take a nap. Once my mask goes on my average time to sleep (monitored with a Zeo sleep monitor) is 3 minutes. I would have a difficult time sleeping at without it at this point. I just remember the times before I had the CPAP that when I was up in the mountains and couldnt fall asleep because I was having difficult time breathing, this is way better than that.
I think the most important thing is a comfortable mask and to make sure that your starting settings with Ramp arent too low. Many DMEs just send you home with the default settings for Ramp which are usually way too low. If you dont like you mask, make sure you try different ones (DME should swap for free during your first 2 months) keep trying different ones.
Give it a couple of weeks and try to relax about the whole thing. Your brain will help you adjust because it likes getting full oxygen at night.
