Slight tingling burning sensation in my nose
Lately I have had a slight tingling/ burning sensation in m nose when I use the cpap. I have no idea what is causing this, It started about a month ago. I thought maybe I was not getting enough moisture so I turned up the humidifier a few nights but it seems not to make any difference. I have always run that on 1 and bwen fine. Any ideas?

You need more humidity. Typically this is area specific so there is no universal standard for humidifiers. In Maryland I did not even use humidifiers on my patients, mostly because the place was a swamp and I was afraid that I might drown them if I introduced even a passive humidifiers (joking). In Colorado however the place is bone dry and I can not imagine anyone using a CPAP device with out a humidifier that is set on two or three.OceanGoingGal wrote:Lately I have had a slight tingling/ burning sensation in m nose when I use the cpap. Make sure it is filled up to the line and use warmish water for a faster start. It is annoying to use in dry climate because you have to fill it up every single day but it also cuts down on cleaning time. In Colorado the primary problem with humidifiers is limestone build up because the water vaporizes so fast that you'll loose about 75% of the tank in 8 hours. Limestone does not come off in the dishwasher either.

When that happened to me, I found that using the HH in passover mode fixed the problem.

The nasal pillows did that for me at first. It wasn't a slight problem it was awful. Now I am getting used to it and it isn't bad as long as I switch masks from time to time. Didn't you increase your pressure? Maybe this caused it if so.

That's why I use distilled water.Calist wrote:In Colorado the primary problem with humidifiers is limestone build up because the water vaporizes so fast that you'll loose about 75% of the tank in 8 hours. Limestone does not come off in the dishwasher either.

Though Calist in not a reliable source for information, he/she is correct in that more humidification is needed. I always had problems with a runny nose and burning nostrils until they actually came up with a humidifier for cpaps. I also found that using a full room humidifier did the trick as well. I would start at 4 and raise it 1 level if you do not get relief within a couple of days until you hit the sweet spot. You may need to adjust the level if the outside humidity outside increases.

Hi Laura,
I live about an hour from you in FL.... it may be the change in our weather as it has gotten drier in the last week so lack of humidity is probably the culprit. I use mine in passive mode and it seems to provide what I need. However, if we get cold enough to put on heat this winter, I may need to actually turn the humidifier on!

Re: Slight tingling burning sensation in my nose
The burning/tingling started before I turned up my pressure. At the time it was summer and humidity was high here in central Florida. Last night I turned up my humidifier to 2 and there was no problem at all. I always use distilled water unless I am somewhere where none is available. For now the problemseems to have abated. Let's hope it stays that way.

I live in northern New Mexico that has basically the same climate and hard water as Colorado. Using water from the tap is going to cause problems regardless of the device. The lime coats the inside of everything: washing machines, dishwashers, coffee machines, showers, etc. I would never use anything but distilled water in a CPAP humidifier -- ever.

1. If additional moisture inline is not resolving your stinging nose you need medical intervention as it could be anything, including a mild infection or such. Better safe than sorry. You may also have done something like erode the mucous lining between the surface and a close to the surface blood vessel or nerve; had a friend whose dad did that a while back and he would up going in and having it lasered. Ten minutes on the table, mostly prep time. One or two laser shots (frozen....painless) and was back to work the next morning. Who knows what it is? That's my only point. First thing, of course, is to crank up the humidity. As to water in the humidifier? I used cheap distilled water. And I have no residue whatsoever... use about one jug a month so no big deal (at $5 a jug... we also use it for our coffee maker and kettle and iron, etc.) Alternative? Use tap water and try to clean it out with a product from the local hardware. They will usually have something you can use. We use CLR in our dishwasher about once a year to clean out the nozzles. Works well.Calist wrote:Make sure it is filled up to the line and use warmish water for a faster start. Re: Slight tingling burning sensation in my nose
Oceangoinggal I woke up a few weeks ago with my nose burning and my lungs dry. it had cooled down a bit in Georgia not cold by no means maybe in the mid forty's. I ordered a climate line hose I was going to anyway before winter. I have not had that awful sensation again sense I hooked it up. I think it was for me the cold air. I now preheat and keep my heat up on the hose.
hope you find the problem cause it was not a good feeling for me. I didn't use mine till my climate line came in and so far so good.

Re: Slight tingling burning sensation in my nose
I have turned up my humidifier and it has helped some. Last night I was talking to a friend who has a very old machine and no humidifier. She has the same problem and her pressure is on 20. She is planning to go to the Dr again soon to see about getting a new sleep study and a new machine with a humidifier. The other night I put my pressure up another notch to 13 so far so good. The burning seems to be in better control now that I turned up the humidifier.

Re: Slight tingling burning sensation in my nose
Chalk another one up for this group! I had noticed that my nose tingled sometimes while wearing my nasal mask. It wasn't enough to keep me from sleeping (I thought). After reading this thread, I filled up my humidifier to the max, and turned my humidifier to 4. The tingling is gone. I slept 10 hours straight through with one brief awakening to cough and roll over (I am battling a virus). An AHI of 1.9 is pretty good.
I found my Mucinex last night, and it did help reduce the coughing.
I started out on the S8 Escape Auto. I didn't like it because there was no data, and my average AHI was over 6 (because I was not yet titrated, sleep center insisted I run it wide-open until they scored my titration study). So after the usual insurance merry-go-round, I bought an S9 Elite out of pocket for $800 (including humidifier) the same day my pressure was changed to a cpap of 10. I just couldn't resist at that price. Now, with my cpap pressure of 10, the same thing I averaged on the auto, my AHI has never been more than 4. Ten day average is 2.2. On the auto, I had several AHIs of 12, and felt like it!
Does this demonstrate a classic example that the auto was 'chasing' events, or is the S9 actually more effective in general than the S8? I think it's likely the former.

Re: Slight tingling burning sensation in my nose
I know this is an old thread, but I found it because I was having the burning and like a burning smell in my nose and was looking for answers.
After reading this post and others, I decided to actually take a look at my unit. I don't use the humidifider, but somehow, it got turned on. I switched it off and haven't had the trouble anymore.
