Could my nightly skin care cause mask leaks??

Post by Topsail Girl » Tue Oct 19, 2010 4:14 pm

Hi All,
I have a morning and nightly skin care routine which has me using a moisturizer both times daily. I began this new regimen (Obagi Nu-Derm) about 4 or 5 weeks ago. I've noticed that I'm having leaks around my nose area mostly just above my lip area. I have started using the skin care routine roughly 2 hours before bed time. I do not want to stop my routine becuase I can definitely see and feel a huge difference. Does anyone have experience with this issue? Should I go to 3 hours before bed or only use the moisturizer in the AM? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!! I have young looking skin for my age and would like to keep it!!!!

It might make your face a little slick - beautiful but slick. Try making or buying cloth mask liners which might make the mask stay in place better.

You hit the nail on the head! We are not supposed to use creams on our face at night or whenever we use the mask. I now do my race routine in the morning instead of bedtime. Your mask is supposed to go on a clean, dry face. Not only will the creams cause leaks it will cause the silicone on the mask break down faster.

Thanks ladies. I think I may be able to skip the nightly moisturizer - I'll ask the dermatologist about this. This routine has to be prescribed to you by a doctor because 2 of the components are pharmacy meds. One being a skin bleaching and corrector and one being a skin lightener and blending cream. The main ingredient in both is hydroquinone USP 40, so I'm wondering if THAT might be the issue rather than the moisturizer. I guess I need to do some more research and see if I can only use those products in the AM.

I don't use anything, but if I did, I'd use 100% aloe.
I would avoid petrolatum,--isn't that the main offender with silicone breakdown?

I use mask liners so that I can still use my skin care products at bedtime - made a huge difference. - Kim

Evening
Within 15-20 mins before bed, this is what I do:
  • Cut (bite) a red grape in half & spread the juice all over my face (and makeup if I'm wearing some) including eyelids (boy does it sting if it gets in your eyes)...let sit for 3-5 minutes. My dermatologist knows this is my treatment of choice for my dry skin...weird, but I don't need evening moisturizers like I depended on until I started CPAP therapy; doc thinks its the grape's acids and sugars that exfoliate & moisturize. He thinks my skin looks great, esp given he hasn't had to cut off any sun damaged skin in yrs & my 2-yr dance with rosacea has mysteriously disappeared.
  • Wash with DermaE's Soy & Papaya facial soap (dissolves makeup), rinse well
  • Apply 1 squirt of DermaE's vitamins C & E (no-oil) gel all over face...it dries before I maskup and seems to have no effect on the silicon.
  • If my skin is really irritated, I will apply a thin layer of DermaE's Alphalipoderm facial repair with alpha lipoic acid & green tea on my face but not near the silicon as it makes the silicon hazy. I wear the Hybrid, so the mask is not near my eyes, nose, tops & sides of cheeks, forehead.
Morning:
  • Shower & wash hair
  • Exfoliate gently with St Ives Apricot scrub for acne (the aging skin version didn't do a thing for me)
  • Wash face with COSTCO's new citrus natural soap
  • Apply 2 squirts of DermaE's vitamins C & E (no-oil) gel all over face
  • Apply thin layer of DermaE's Alphalipoderm facial repair with alpha lipoic acid & green tea
  • Apply Smashbox Photofinish with SPF (pinkish color)
  • Apply makeup if using
I have if I might boast a bit beautiful skin. Now my hair is a completely different story

Yes Muse I can see where you may have some trouble with "that hair".

Very interesting skin care routine Muse!!! I'll hang onto this and when I run out of my Obagi treatment I'll give it a try. Your routine sounds much easier than mine - BASIC obagi treatment is 6 steps in the am and pm. Then you add in special eye, red skin, vitamin c drops, etc on top of the basic.

ETA - I can totally understand the hair issues you have.......

Wow, Muse, how did you ever come up with that combination/routine? I am open to new skin care regimes, though, as I have no commitment to mine.

Sleeping, I could never follow through for more than a few weeks but when I made the switch to Obagi I could really see improvement in the 3rd week so that convinced me to keep moving forward. The routine Muse uses seems to be quite a bit shorter than mine so I'm seriously considering looking more into her products to use when my Obagi runs out. It's quite expensive even buying online it is still about 250 bucks for a 3 month supply.

topsail Gal, If you are not already doing this, consider washing your mask in the morning every day in warm water...some use baby shampoo or other non-harsh soap. That would help keep your mask in top condition and prolong its use.
And thank you Muse-Inc for posting your nightly routeen. Will give it a try.

Desperation! I had several kinds of rosacea symptoms, the worst one makes your nose swell a la WC Fields...absolutely horrifying to see my nose visibly larger every morning .

Dermatologist put me on an antibiotic (so I hadda eat yogurt to compensate), a cortisone-based cream, and something called Finacea -- all 3 targeted to managing rosacea. My skin was so reactive that I had to start discarding everything that touched my skin and hunting for products that wouldn't irritage my already horribly irritated skin. Had rosacea for 2 yrs...trial and error finding products. I like DermaE as most, no all, didn't irritate my skin and surprisingly these I settled on using made a huge difference in returning my skin to what it was before rosacea. Their products don't contain sulfates (skin irritant) or parabens (bad for skin).

The grape idea came from First or Women's World magazine. Really works to banish or reduce dry skin...perfect for us hoseheads as you apply it and then wash it off.
